Johanna is born to Hannibal van de Cust and Flora van Bengaalen (also known as Sophia Lodriga/Lodrica). Hannibal Dias van de Cust disappears from muster rolls between after 1719. Flora van Bengalen remarries and is recorded with Carel Jansz van Bengalen/Bombaaij and 1 daughter from 1727 until 1743 when she disappears from the Cape Muster Rolls.

Johanna, as the stepdaughter of Carel Jansz van Bengalen would have been entitled to take her stepfather's name and would have likely been known as Johanna Jans/Jansen.

In 1744, Johanna's mother's 2nd husband , Carel Jansz van Bengalen leaves the majority of his estate to the two minor children of Zacharias Eijkenstroom. Zacharias Eijkenstroom was married to Johanna Janse/Janzen/ Jansen/Janz.

Zacharias Eijkenstroom and Johanna Janzen call their first child Elisabeth Sophia and Carel Janzen and Sophia Lodrica are the witnesses. This strongly indicates that Johanna Janzen was the daughter of Carel Jansz van Bengalen/Bombaaij and Flora van Bengalen (also known as Sophia Lodrica/Lodriga)
