Johanna Margaret “Hannah” Bowman Kitzmiller
BIRTH
1775
Pennsylvania, USA
DEATH
unknown
West Virginia, USA
BURIAL
Kitzmiller family Cemetery at Abrams Creek
Grant County, West Virginia, USA
Hannah was born about 1775 in PA and is shown in the 1850 census living with her son Lloyd Kitzmiller.
Hannah's grandson, Alkire Ellsworth Bosley, writes the following:
About the saddest story I have heard concerning this family was told by my mother, Virginia (Kitzmiller) Bosley. It was her duty as eldest daughter to take the milk each night and morning to grandmother Hannah (Bowman) Kitzmiller, who owned a special cow.
A cold morning early in November, my mother and her sister Naomi were milking. They looked toward grandmother's house (she lived alone, not wishing the company of anyone). My mother said she saw heavy smoke rising from her chimney and remarked " Granny's early".
When done milking, Virginia approached the door and found the cloth frozen to the door. She called "Granny, your cloth is frozen to the door".
Upon entering the room, there a terrible sight met her eyes. Her grandmother lay with her head near the center of the fireplace - her head burned so badly that no one could recognize her and already dead.
This was several years after the death of her husband John Kitzmiller. Both are buried on the hill overlooking the old mill site
Overlooking the old mill site, field stones mark the graves of Hannah, John & their children Tiny & James. These graves are between the stone fence & the new fence, on north of, and beyond the family cemetery which is under the big pine tree.
Per Tombstone Readings from Robt. Newell,
Approching from the west, the first grave is that of Tiny who died at about age 7, next is James - died at age 17, then John and by his side Hannah.
According to the the book "From The Danube To The Susquehanna: 350 Years of The Kitzmiller Family - By John M. Kitzmiller, II & John M. Kitzmiller, Volume 1 Page 123), there are 3 children buried next to John & Hannah, children's names not mentioned.
