About Johanne Pedersen

Johanne Samueline Pedersen, born in Innvik, was a Norwegian politician for the Labour Party. She was elected to the Norwegian Parliament from Hedmark in 1945, and was re-elected on one occasion. She had previously served in the position of deputy representative during the term 1937–1945. Pedersen was a member of Brandval municipality council from 1934 to 1940 and 1945 to 1951.

Pedersen was born in Innvik in Sogn og Fjordane, the daughter of farmers Garbrand and Dorothea Teigen. Having spent years 1905-1907 in the US, she moved to Oslo and educated at Midwifery School. After graduating in 1911, she worked first as a district midwife in Brandval Hedmark until 1915 before she went to Minneapolis and worked one year as a midwife and nurse there. Back in Norway, she worked two years as a midwife in Whitstable until she in 1918 took up work in Brandval.

Eventually took Pedersen several leadership positions; including, she was in 1930 chairman of Lund Seats ARBEIDERLAG, in 1932 for school board in Brandval and poor board of the same municipality, in 1937 for Working Ladies' team, and in 1947 for The Norwegian midwife association. Meanwhile engaged herself in Brandval council, where she was first elected in 1934. In the general election in 1937, she asked as third deputy Hedmark without getting into, but the general election in 1945, she was elected. In parliament she sat first four years in the Health and then four years in the Administrative Committee.

Pedersen ble født i Innvik i Sogn og Fjordane, som datter av gårdbrukerne Garbrand og Dorthea Teigen. Etter å ha tilbrakt årene 1905–1907 i USA, flyttet hun til Oslo og utdannet seg ved Jordmorskolen. Etter endt utdannelse i 1911 arbeidet hun først som distriktsjordmor i Brandval i Hedmark frem til 1915, før hun dro til Minneapolis og arbeidet ett år som jordmor og pleierske der. Tilbake i Norge arbeidet hun to år som jordmor i Løten før hun i 1918 tok opp igjen arbeidet i Brandval.

Etterhvert tok Pedersen opp flere lederverv; blant annet ble hun i 1930 formann for Lundeseter arbeiderlag, i 1932 for Skolestyret i Brandval og for Fattigstyret i samme kommune, i 1937 for Arbeiderkvinnelaget, og i 1947 for Den norske jordmorforening. Samtidig engasjerte hun seg i Brandval kommunestyre, der hun først ble valgt inn i 1934. Ved stortingsvalget i 1937 stilte hun som tredje vararepresentant for Hedmark uten å komme inn, men ved stortingsvalget i 1945 ble hun valgt inn. På Stortinget satt hun først fire år i Helsekomiteen, og deretter fire år i Administrasjonskomiteen.
