About Johanne Rede
Family
The family of Rede has been settled at Beccles for several centuries, but seems to have emigrated from Norwich. Blomefield, the historian of Norfolk, says, “the first of this family from whom any regular account can be deduced, was John Rede, Sheriff of Norwich in 1488, and Mayor in 1496; he was buried at Beccles.” The Heraldic Visitations for Suffolk, and the manuscripts in the British Museum, all confirm this statement of Blomefield.
His children:
- 1. John Read, afterwards Sheriff of Norfolk, eldest son.
- 2. William Read, of Beccles, Suffolk.
- 3. Hon. Edward Read, Mayor of Norwich, our progenitor.
- 4. Rev. Thomas Read, Rector of Beccles, Suffolk.
- 5. Edmond.
- 6. Roger.
- 7. Clement.
- 8. A son, name unknown, who probably died young.
- There were also four daughters.
Origins
A note from Curator Pam Wilson, 1/15/17: Her parentage is not clear. While many trees have positioned her as daughter of William Ludlow of Hill-Deverill and his wife Margaret Rymer, this presents a conflict with another Joan Ludlow claimed to be their daughter, married to John Norwood and Thomas Ringwood, according to The Peerage of Ireland: Or, a Genealogical History of the Present Nobility ... by John Lodge and Mervyn Archdall (see Google Books).
Until evidence is found to verify that this Joan (who lived her adult life in Norfolk) was of Hill-Deverill in Wiltshire, let us maintain this distinction.

Crest - A buck's head erased argent, attired or between two palm branches, of the second charged on the neck with three bars gemelles or three Cornish choughs proper."
Missing a couple of generations I think. Does it go Thomas, Edmund, Edmund, then John who married Joan Ludlow? Or, does it go Thomas, John, John + Joan Ludlow?
