His son, John August Anderson, records in his journal the death year as 1873. He talks about it immediately after the birth of his daughter Oct. 25, 1872.

"On the 21st day of January, 1873, my dear father died, after only five days of sickness, he having been after a load of wood and caught a bad cold which settled in his lungs. This was a bad bereavement to us all, especially to Mother, who felt very bad. We tried to console her the best way possible, but it was such an unlooked for event, he being strong and healthy till within a few days of his death, always being such a hard worker."

He talks about how good his father was to him after he broke his leg in the winter of 1871-1872.
