John H. Beckmann dies Suddenly
Another of our older residents has been called from this earthly life and latest to answer the Master's summons was John H. Beckmann who passed away in his home the day after Christmas, December 26, 1953, at 5:15 p.m. Mr. Beckmann had reached the age of 89 years, 10 months and 5 days.
He had always enjoyed good health, but as the years advanced he gradually slowed down in his daily living, especially in the past year when his eyesight began to fail. Only in recent days did he show noticeable signs of failing health, but even then he was not bedfast nor did he suffer pain. A cerebral hemorrhage caused his death, and he went quickly and peacefully to rest.
John H. Beckman, son of Wm. H. Beckmann and Caroline nee Hempeler, was born at Garnavillo, Clay county, Iowa on Febr. 21, 1864. He was baptized in early infancy. At the age of two years the family moved to Nebraska and settled in Helena precinct in Johnson county. There he was instructed in the truths of Holy Scripture as confessed by the Lutheran church and confirmed in the faith of his Savior by Pastor J. H. Hempeler on April 13, 1879.
On April 29, 1886 he was united in marriage to Caroline Riensche. The ceremony took place near Phillipsburg, Kans., with Pastor G. F. Dilges officiating. Ten children were born to this union, six of whom preceded their father and mother in death.
For some time the Beckmann's lived in Phillips county, Kansas, then moved to Helena precinct, west of Cook, Nebr. There they resided 30 years, retiring to Sterling in 1921 and had made their home here ever since. On June 10 of this year Mrs. Beckmann passed away, ending a marriage of more than 67 years.
Mr. Beckmann was a faithful member of St. John American Lutheran church in Sterling and lived a Christian life which was an example to all who knew him. His pastor administered the sacrament of Holy Communion to him on Saturday afternoon and Mr. Beckmann confessed his confidence in the saving merits of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and acknowledged his readiness to meet his Lord.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at his late home and 2:00 in St. John's church, with Pastor Herman C. Damm in charge. The quartet, Mr. and Mrs. Edes Eilers, Altman Berg and Mrs. Harvey Giesmann sang "The Old rugged Cross" and "No Night There," accompanied by Mrs. John Goldenstein.
Burial was in the Helena cemetery and pallbearers were Elmer Poehler, John Reutter, Harry Haynes, John Bargman, Eldo Barstler and Herman Kruger.
