Lewis was not listed with Ludwig's family in the 1744 Lutheran Congregation in Stone Arabia, NY. Some descendants of Lewis say he is a brother of Jacob & David. - the sons of Ludwig. No proof or connection has been found. First record was Nov. 8, 1774 when he purchased 150 acres on Patterson Creek for #150. Deed was recorded May 9, 1775 in Hamshire Co., VA.
In Oct. 1787, he is on a petition of Fayette Co., KY (VA until 1792) regarding the establishment of a new town called Charlestown, and also a petition regarding payment for Clark's expedition. Sept. 17, 1788, he signed a petition regarding the division of Fayette Co. to create Woodford Co.
On the 1810 census of Woodford Co., KY, Lewis is listed with 8 males 16-26, 1 female 26-45, and 10 slaves. Apparently he and his wife Jemima did not live on the same plantation as she is not recorded with Lewis in 1810 or 1820 but with son Jacob and then a grandson.
In 1823, Baptist preacher, John Taylor wrote in his journal that old brother Castleman and his companion had been together perhaps fifty years - kept a tannery - apprentices have been numerous (which would explain the large number of males with him in the 1810 census).
On March 1, 1827, the Will of Lewis was written and proved in the June Court 1828. He named wife Jemima and eight children. (Woodford Co., KY Will Book)
