DAR:David Castleman and brothers Jacob and Lewis came toVirginia from Albany County,N.Y.about 1750. The first record in Virginia of any of the three brothers shows Lewis standing godfather to severalindians adults at a Convaction at Winchester,VA .Called by Gov. Dinwiddle in 1753. David lived and died there in Federick,Va. Jacob settled in Pittsburgh, PA.c.1785 and died there c. 1815. Lewis settled in Woodford County,KY.in 1787 .David purchased " Head Springs " farm at Summit Point,Va. (now W.Va ) in 1762. He conveyed 2 acres of this farm to the Hopewell congregation on which a church was to be built in . In 1772 he sold "Head Spring" farm and purchased the "Glen Owens"farn three miles east of Berryville,Va. In 1811 he sold "Glen Owens"farm reserving the burying ground where his wife had been buriedin 1808 and where he was buried in 1826. In 1811 David purchased "Rose Hill" at Wickliffe where he lived until his death. In 1824 he conveyed one acre to the trustee of Wickliffe Academy on which to build a school house. Later when the school was discontiued the school lot was enclosed with was enclosed with the original church lot and now forms about half of the present church lot. On file inthe Virginia State Libaryamong public claim papers of Frederick County, Va. is thefollowing manuscript certificate- I hereby certifie for public use of David Castleman muttons adjudged to be worth six hundred and ten pounds ,for which payment shall be agreeable to Act of Assembly given under my hand this day 28 th of July 1781 610.00 pounds. Rich Eastin,Comissioner,Federick County ". He bought land from the Washingtons and built a colonial home " North Hill".This home is in goodshape and is currently used as a summer resort. There are many features of historic interest.The area was at one time an active place with native Americans ,as many tools have been unearthed and put on display. This is also an area where many battles were fought in both the Cival and Revolution wars. Castleman,s ferry became very important spot to control asthis was a primary crossing for the Shenadoah River. Snickers gap is aspot that Braddock and Sheridan passed on their famous marches. There is an aged broken tablet on the lawn to the memory of Betty Carter, a niece of General George Washington as well as other nieces and nephews.David Castlman wrote a will...." It is my will and desire that my executor here after named shall apply the rent arising from said farm , first to the payment of the annunties due to Mr and Mrs Washington and the residue to be applied insuch a manneras my executor shall think advantageous . My executor have full right and priviledge to make any compromise with the Washingtons they think most expediated ,in order to release the land from the incumbraces of said annuity. CMMIS00041.1.
