Een van verskeie kandidate( broers en ‘n pa) op wie se grond ‘n kennis van Sparrman [1] ‘n Viverra putorius (muishond) gevang het. Dit was naby Rondebosch.

Die leser mag vra wat is nou snaaks is aan die noem van ’n muishond. Destyds was die beskrywing van Afrika-organismes nog in sy kinderskoene, en baie daarvan is gedoen deur Sparrman en sy mede-Sweed, medegeleerde en goeie vriend Thunberg. Beide was ook studente van die vermaarde taksonoom Linnaeus. Sparrman en Thunberg was beide aan die Kaap in April 1772.

Dit maak mens ook trots hoe sommige Kaapse inwoners en boere as fasiliteerders optree en selfs bruikbare menings verskaf ter bevordering van die wetenskap – so ver vewyderd van die boslanster-beeld wat skrywers opgedis het. Sulke mense het bestaan, maar ons het balans nodig.
