Some trees have the name Johan Christoffel. Johan "Hans" Georg Emig (Amick) was born in 1699, possibly in or near the tiny German village of Uttenhoffen. While we cannot confirm that Hans Emig was born in the little town, his wife, Anna Dorothea Rotter, most certainly was. Uttenhoffen lies just northwest of the city of Strasburg, and not many miles from the banks of the Rhine River. This little village is neighbor to the slightly bigger ones of Gundershoffen and Griesbach (now part of Gundershoffen), and together the three communities comprised a Lutheran parish. The rural village was sparsely populated, mostly by farmers. Even as late as 1865 there were only about 200 inhabitants of Uttenhoffen, with most being described as "cultivator" or "laborerur" (farm hand), there being few craftsmen or manufacturers. [Source: Rick Toothman] While there were few Catholics or Jews in early Uttenhoffen records, by the 19th century most of the inhabitants were Catholic (probably a direct result of the Palatine Emigration).

There are no records of the Emig family in Uttenhoffen before Hans's 1717 marriage to Anna Dorothea Rotter, so it is probable that the Emigs immigrated into Uttenhoffen, possibly from Switzerland. In the mid to late 17th century there was a sizable influx of Swiss into the area around Uttenhoffen (a result of the Swiss government's persecution and expulsion of any who did not conform to the rituals and requirements of the state church). Most of them were from the area of Bern. Anna Dorothea "Dorothy" Rotter Emig (b. 27 Feb 1692) was the daughter of Uttenhoffen locals Hans Georg Rotter and Anna Marie Volckel. There is a distinction made in the records that Dorothy was the "legal" daughter of Hans Rotter. Her mother, Anna Marie Volckel, was called the "legitimate" daughter of Dorst Volkel (also a citizen of Uttenhoffen). I'm not sure what the distinctions "legal" and "legitimate" signify.
