About Johannes Heinrich "Hendrick" Hager

Date of marriage might be 1732. Date and place of marriage have also been (erroneously?) reported to be 1732 in Herkimer County, New York.

Joel Hager has a great deal of info on this family.

It appears that all of the Hagers from Siegen, Germany, are all related in some way. This includes the Hagers of Hagerstown, David (1712) and Jonathan (1719); Killian "Callie"Hager (<1729) of Westmoreland County; Johannes Hager (1734)(1724?) of Berks County; Johannes Hager (~1701); Jacob Hager Sr (<1765) of Chester County; Hendrick Hager (1702); and the Haugers of Indiana.

His story is told in[1] LDS Ref 929.273 H122hw. He emigrated on Dec 25 1709 at the age of seven for New York, and settled in the Hudson River Valley, Schoharie Co, NY. The family history claims that one of his brothers settled in Hagerstown, MD (that was a half-brother, Jonathan, founder of Hagerstown).

Henry Z. Jones <genealogy@HankJones.com> has done a lot of genealogical research on the Palatines who came to New York in the early 1700s, including some Hager research. Some of his records do not agree with other research records, and the conflicts might never be resolved. Hank Z Jones, "The Palatine Families of New York 1710".

Hendrick Hager had a will dated 13 Sep 1793 in which he mentions his wife Gertrude; his sons Jacob, Hans Yost, and David; daughters Anna Becker, Sarah Borst, Catenne Vannes, Delia Vrooman, Elisabeth Braun, Eva Mattice, and Dorothy Mattice. Executors were his John Jost and others.

Hendrick (1702) and three of his brothers (incl. Michael and Johannes) were accompanied by their uncle Rev. Johan Frederick Heger (and wife Maria), left Rotterdam Dec 25 1709, arriving in New York in Jun 1710. They settled in the Hudson River Valley in New York's Schoharie County.

Info from John Hoff <johnhoff3rd@email.msn.com> and John Illgen <TeutonJohn@yahoo.com>

Henry Cady's report states "Henry Heger and wife Dorothea lived in the Mohawk Valley where he was a Patentee at Burnestfield on the north side of the river 30 Apr 1725. The family moved to Schoharie County late in 1745 or early 1746 where he received a grant of 900 acres at Fulton. Hendrick was naturalized on 3 May 1766. He was a freeholder at Schoharie in 1763. He was captured by the Tories and Indians in August 1780 and held for eleven months." Henry Cady was in error in many of his findings or assumptions; this appears to have been one.

From Roger Wilson <RWWPhoto@aol.com>: " I believe I have a copy of his will from the Schoharie Co. surrogate's office. The will is dated September 13, 1793. Hendrick leaves his estate to: Gertrude, his wife; sons; Jacob, JohnJost, and David; unmarried daughter Maria HAGER and married daughters; Anna BECKER, Sarah BORST, Caterine VANNEST, Delia VROMAN, Elizabeth BROWN, Gertrude BROWN, Eva MATTICE and Dorothy MATTICE. The son's names are repeated in "Exploits of Captain Jacob Hager" in the Spring-Summer 1965 of The Schoharie County Historical Review" along with Joseph and Peter HAGER and daughter Gertrude. Jacob is buried in the Hager Family Cemetery near Blenheim, NY.

There are at least two extensive genealogies of the family at the Old Stone Fort Museum in Schoharie, NY. This branch of the HAGER family may be more than you want to hear about as the authors of the above genealogies traced a number of generations. The Museum is only open until Oct. 31 and usually reopens in May. They have a good website Click here: The Old Stone Fort Museum, a Revolutionary War battle site or if that doesn't work http://www.schohariehistory.net/OSF.htm."

Per Mel Mattice <mattice51@altavista.com>, he may have had a second wife, Dorothy Kast.

Who this Johann Heinrich "Hendrick" Hager is not known. It cannot be the one who married Anna Gertrud Petrie, for the children of Dorothea Kast were born in 1731 and 1732, whereas the marriage between the other Johann Heinrich "Hendrick" Hager took place in 1730. This Johann Heinrich "Hendrick" Haeger had to have been born before 1715, for that is when Dorothea Kast was born, and the marriage took place in 1730; he had to have been at least 21 years old to marry. The one who married Anna Gertrud Petrie was born in 1702, and he is the only one found in that age range.

On page 323 of Henry Z. Jones' The Palatine Families of New York 1710 (which I think I sent you) it says that "The Hunter Ledger recorded that she(Anna Maria Jacobi Hager) married John Muller as reflected in the Journal entry of 29 Sept. 1711. A letter back to Germany dated 10 July 1749 and written jointly by Anna Maria( Jacobi) Hager and her second husband Johannes Muller mentioned.... we arrived in 1710 in N.Y. after a long and troublesome journey, and then during harvest time my husband (Rev. Johann Heinrich Hager, I assume) d. after a short illness, being well at noon and dead in the evening. The infant boy, b. to us in Germany, Henr. Hager by name, has md. here (Henry Hager and Anna Petrie, I assume) and has 11 living ch. I have remarried in 1711. My husband, Johannes Muller by name, still living in the grace God, comes from Rutershausen, district office of Ebersbach, by whom in peaceful matrimony together we had 5 sons and 3 daughters which the Lord up to this time has kept alive; of them 4 sons and two daughters are md."
