Lived dist Beaufort West and George before he moved with the Groot Trek. The farm Breedspruit to the north of the Vaalrivier was registered to his name on 5 April 1847.

Married only once, to AL de Beer. Did not re-marry with JG Devenish as is mistakenly indicated in SAG 1.

He is said to be:

1. A son of Jacobus STEYN b1c8d2 and his first wife Susanna Elizabeth HOLTZHAUSEN - BUT SAG 12 p.224-225 does not list him as their son He was born in 1775 and they were married only in 1780. This would be very unusual for them to have a son this long before their marriage. Of course, in genealogy many unusual events surface...

3. The father of Josef Petrus Hermanus STEYN * c.1823 + 1884 x Martha Johanna LOMBAARD * c.1823 + c.1884

He might be confused with Jacobus Marthinus STEYN * c.1798 who is listed in SAG 12 p. 224-225 as the son of Jacobus STEYN b1c8d2 and his second wife, Martha Catharina VIVIER

This Jacobus Marthinus STEYN was married to Anna Leonora DE BEER * 1807 + 1872

According to SAG 12 he did not have a son named Josef Petrus Hermanus STEYN * 1823 x 1850 Martha Johanna LOMBAARD but he did have a son named Petrus Hermanus STEYN *1823 x 1852 Jacomina Hendrina Margaretha SCHEEPERS.

So maybe

1. JMA STEYN and JM STEYN b1c8d2e5 might be the same person and

2. Anna Leonora DE BEER the wife of both JMA and JM might be the same person and

3. the sons JPH and PH STEYN might be the same person and maybe Martha Johanna LOMBAARD could have been this STEYN husband's one wife and JHM SCHEEPERS his other wife.

Further research is needed here to clarify the puzzle for a mystery it certainly is at this stage :-)
