On 20th April 1901, Johannes Daniel Jansen van Rensburg, aged 37, surrendered to the British at Lydenburg. He was a pacifist. He and his family were received at Barbeton Refugee Camp on 30th June 1901. On the BCCD web pages their farm history was given as "van Rensburg family - Lydenburg". Johannes Daniel was branded a "hendsopper" (coward), ostracized and frowned upon by his fellow Boers for many years. He and his wife Maria Jacomina (born Jansen van Rensburg) (B1.C5.D7.E7.F2.G3.) were first cousins, (their father's were brothers) and had 6 children aged between 3 and 17 when they arrived at the camp. All survived the duration of the war and left for Machadodorp on 9th October 1902.
