Following is a compilation of what data I have about Johannes Adam Phillippi. & Maria Barbara Eva Eichelberger. I have learned to cite my sources, but too late for some of the data included here, for which I apologize. If you can cite any of the original sources for me (or if you ARE my original source <g) I would appreciate hearing from you. As always, additional information is always appreciated.

Please notice that there are TWO sets of parents given for Johannes Adam Phillippi. I'd very much like to accurately identify who his parents were -- does anyone have a "Dear Mom & Dad" letter written by him to his parents? <VBG The same is true for her parents, two different couples have been "identified".....

Johannes Adam Phillippi was born on 4 Aug. 1736 in Volksberg, Alsace, Germany (France ca. 1919). [sources: 1,2,3,4,5] He immigrated on 28 Aug. 1750 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [Sources: 6,7,5] He was in 1751 in Muddy Creek Lutheran Church; Emanuel Lutheran Church at Warwick, Elizabeth Twshp, Lancaster Co., PA. [Source: 5] He died on 21 Oct. 1800 in Wythe County, Virginia. [Sources: 8,9,5] He served in the military in Virginia. [Source: 5] From the Patriot Index of the DAR, Centennial Edition (1990), for Phillippi: Philipy: John b. ca 1736 PA; d. 10-21-1800 VA; m. Maria Barbara Eva Eichelberger; SOL VA.

He was in Warwich Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; Religion: Evangelical Lutheran Church. [Sources: 10,11,5] He resided in Wythe City, Virginia. [Source: 5] An early letter (written in German) states that these Philippi's moved to Alsace from Switzerland in 1650. [Source Unknown]

"European records of the family are sketchy. One story has us connected to King Louis XIV as being descendants of him and his second mistress -- via the Duke of Orleans. This has not been documented. however. Reverend Alexander Phillippe tells us that the ancestral home of the family (and this is more probable) was in Leipsic, Germany where men of this name occupied professional chairs in the University of Leipsic for 300 years. Since the family was traditionally Huguenot or Protestant, religious pressures of the day probably forced them to migrate to eastern France, southern Germany, Holland and finally to the United States." John came over on the ship Phoenix in 1750 . It departed from Rotterdam and John and his father were listed as Johannes Phillippi and Johannes Phillippi Jun. The earliest record of John is his marriage in Lancaster Co., PA, Warwick Twp. to Maria Eva Barbara Eva Eichelberger. Their daughter Maria Margaretta was baptized in PA May 1769. In about 1774 or 75 they were living in what is today Wythe Co., VA where he farmed. He was an elder in St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Other records were found at Christianburg, VA and others at Wythe Co., VA. He served in the Rev. War , in Capt. Buchanan's Company Militia Montgomery County, Virginia.

Johann had been born in Alsace, France and emigrated to America with his father and family. He moved to Wythe County, VA from York County, PA where his family had settled in 1732 when the Phillippes had migrated there from France. German speaking natives of Alsace, France they intermarried with and took on the habits of their Pennsylvania Dutch neighbors. when these people began settling the Piedmont area of VA, John Phillippe was the first to come to western Virginia, John and Eva having joined the westward migration at the close of the Rev. War.

(NOTE: Regarding his parentage, Gwynne Conner Lundy writes " I have been in the debate as to whether or not this John Philippi (who marries Eichelberger) is one of the sons of the Philippi / Cleiss union or not. I still keep the Philippi / Eichelberger tree separate from the Philippi / Cleiss tree only because I am unsure.")

DM Stober writes: "As far as I know, none of this family ever went to VA. I have run across many Wythe County Phillippis (I have other names from Wythe Co.). One interesting note to me is that your John/Johannes Phillipi, Jr.'s baptismal sponsors were Leonard Miller is connected with the Stober family. " The family to which she refers is: (Generation #5) Johannes Phillippi b: 9 July 1698 in Volksberg, Alsace, France d: Unknown in PA +Christina GLEISS b: Unknown m: Unknown d: Unknown in PA.

This is another reason why she believes Johannes Adam was not the son of Johannes & Christina.

"On 28 August 1750, Johannes Phillippe came to the courthouse in Philadelphia, Pa. on the ship Phoenix under the master, John Mason from Rotterdam via Cowes in England (with whole freights from Zweybrech, Nassau, Wirtemberg, and Palatinate). Other Phillippe's had arrived the year before plus several on the same ship as Johanne ..." (Passengers having the last name Phillippi, Phillipe, Philippi or Philipy are listed on passenger manifests as having arrived in the New World in 1749, 1750 and 1764.)

John Phillippe served in the Revolutionary War in Capt. Buchanan's company of militia from Montgomery City, Virginia.

Eight of his 13 children were born in Warwich Township and baptized in the Evangelical Lutheran Church . [following is a quote]

"During the 1780s, the Reverend Paul Henkel, a noted Lutheran, traveled through the Reed Creek settlements several times, preaching the Gospel, holding confirmation classes, and baptizing young children ....

Henkel also visited with Barbara Phillipie and her parents, having communion with them and trying to help young Barbara, who since her instruction of 14 days (had) become very scrupulous and extremely conscientious in everything. She was weak, imagined death to be at hand, and decided never to speak to anyone again.

In November 1789, Henkel came to visit at the home of Thomas Coppenheffer (Copenhaver) and again was called upon to see Barbara, who Mrs. Copenhaver insisted possessed a "dumb spirit," and who could be made to speak. Henkel had a long talk with Barbara, cajoling, persuading, and even threatening her, promising that if she did not speak, he would "make hell hot for you; you can and must speak." After a long time and after Henkel's beginning the Lord's Prayer alone, Barabara finally joined him. After they had finished it in unison, the "dumb spirit" left her." Barbara is listed as the daughter of John Phillippi, Sr. in the notes.

He moved to Wythe City, VA from York City, PA where his family had settled in 1732, when the Phillipis had migrated from France. German speaking natives of Alsace, France, they had mingled easily with the Pennsylvania Dutch. John was the first to come to western Virginia, joining the westward migration at the close of the Revolutionary War.

Johannes Adam Phillippi was married to Maria Eva Barbara Eva Eichelberger on 2 Aug. 1757 in Warwich Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [Sources: 14,15,16,17,18,5] Maria Eva Barbara Eva Eichelberger was born on 12 Apr. 1739 in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [Sources: 19,16,18,5] She died on 9 Oct. 1823 in Wythe Co., VA. [Sources: 18,5] She was baptized in Trinity Lutheran Church, Warwick, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. [Sources: 20,21,5] She was a Member of a church in Wythe County, Virginia. [Sources: 22,5]

Researcher Diane Keeton gives Maria's parents as being John George Eichelberger and Anna Juliana Catharina Illig; grandparents as Johannes Eichelberger and Maria Barbara. The book by Kunselman (page 99) gives the child born on 12 April 1739 as "Eva Barbara".

Researcher Melinda Larson gives Maria's parents as being Phillip Friederich Eichelberger and Anna Barbara; grandparents as Johannes Aichelberger and Maria Barbara. The book by Kunselman (page 97) gives the name "Maria Barbara" with the birthdate 15 January 1743. This same child was baptized in the Trinity Lutheran Church on 21 August 1743.

Researcher Diane Keeton gives the birthdate as being 12 April 1739 in Warwick, Lancaster, PA. Researcher Melinda Lou Collins Larson gives the birthdate as being 15 January 1743, place unknown. Bill Cupp gives her birthplace as Germany, date: 12 April 1737.

Revolutionary War Claims: Wythe County - Christopher Phillippi, filed for his pension on 14 Feb. 1846 at the age of 92 years. He enlisted in Virginia and served in the Virginia Line; his service could have been anywhere in the US.

X. Magdalena Molly Phillippi was born in 1773 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. 16,41,42,5 The family may have been enroute to VA when she was born. Magdalena was the daughter of John Phillippi Sr.. Wythe Co. Will Book 8 Page 404. Also inf. in Wythe Co. Deed Book 9 Page 574.

XI. Anna Maria Mary Phillippi was born in 1775 in enroute to VA. 45,46 She died after 1823 in Wythe Co., VA. 18 It is Lonnie Fink who originally links Mary Phillippi (born in 1775, married to an ARNEY) to John Phillippi & Maria Eva Barbara Eichelberger.

The Phillippi family originated in southern Europe, in Germany. It is said that these Philippi’s moved to Alsace from Switzerland in 1650, in a letter written (in German) when one of Johannes’ sisters died. Passengers having the name Phillippi (or Phillipe, Philippi, or Philipy) are listed in shipping registers as having arrived in the New World in 1749, 1750, and 1764 [Lewis, Lundy]. On Sep. 15, 1749 foreigners from Zweibruchen, Nassau, Wirtemberg, and Palatinate arrived on the ship Phoenix, John Mason, Master, from Rotterdam, Georg Frantz Philippi among them. On August 28, 1750 the ship the Phoenix, John Mason, Captain arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam, last from Cowes. Onboard were Johannes Phillipi, Johannes Phillipi jr., Andreas Phillipi and Christian Philipy. About twelve names later is Johannes Philipi [Lundy]. At this point it’s probable that Johann Adam Philippi (b. Aug. 4, 1736) is a son [Bell, DaVar, Lewis, Phillippi1], not a nephew [Canfield] of Johannes Phillipi with whom he sailed. If the latter is true, it is likely he is a son of Georg Frantz Philliippi and that he was following his father, who had emigrated the previous summer. This would make him a nephew of Johannes Philippi and Maria Christina Cleiss Philippi instead of a son as listed above. This position is held by [Canfield, Keeton, Philpy] who then give his date of birth as Oct. 9, 1728.
