  • 1891 - Øyer, Oppland, Norway
  • 1920 - Tacoma Township, Bottineau County, North Dakota
  • 1930 - Tacoma Township, Bottineau County, North Dakota

John T. Skar, son of Gunda and Thorstein Skaad, was born June 10, 1870 in Oppland, Norway, He immigrated to the United States in 1893, settling in Hillsboro, North Dakota, where he was in business. Hearing about the Klondike gold rush in 1898, he and some friends went to Alaska and spent three memorable, good hard working years prospecting. In 1907, he homesteaded in Tacoma Township, Bottineau County. His motor power was supplied by three head of oxen. Crops had to be hauled to Granville, North Dakota, a three day round trip that necessitated staying two nights at the "Midway House" located approximately where the Big Sky Ranch now is.

In 1909 John married Anna Kaldor of Hillsboro, North Dakota. Anna was born July 23, 1881. John and Anna farmed until they had to sell their farm to the Fish and Wildlife Service to become part of the Clark Salyer Wildlife Refuge.

John served as a member of the school board and township board of Tacoma Township and was a charter member of the Deep River Lutheran Free Church where he served as secretary from 1909 to 1933.

After selling the farm, John and Anna moved into Bottineau. John died in 1950. Anna moved to Upham and in 1963 to Rugby. She died in 1968. They had five children
