J. M. Kallevig Had Lived in Kandiyohi County Since Year 1886

Johannes M. Kallevig was born January 16, 1849, at Mosterhavn, Norway. He died at his home in Willmar on November 4 last, his death being due to old age and attendant complications. He had been ill about five months. His youth was spent in Norway with his family, where he received a common school education. For 29 years Mr. Kallevig was a sailor, visiting practically all seaports in Europe, South America and the United States. He crossed the Atlantic 15 times.

In 1881 Mr. Kallevig was married at Mosterhavn, and five years later Mr. & Mrs. Kallevig came to the United States, coming directly to Kandiyohi County, where he lived continuously from 1886 until his death. For a few years he rented farms in Dovre township, later buying a farm of his own in Arctander. This he sold and bought another tract of land in Mamre. In 1912 Mr. Kallevig retired from active farming and moved to Willmar, residing here for the remainder of his life. Mr. & Mrs. Kallevig observed their golden wedding last April.

Mr. Kallevig is survived by his widow and the following children: Matt, Christ, and Lawrence of Willmar, Ole of Minneapolis, Helmer of Minneapolis, Johannes in Montana, Andrew in Canada, Peder in Canada, Bertha (Mrs. J.B. Nelson) of Kerkhoven, Lina (Mrs. Ed Thonvold) of Pennock, and Olivia (Mrs. Gust Reirson) of Minneapolis. One son died many years ago. There are 37 grandchildren. Andrew and Peder of Canada and John of Montana were not present at the funeral. Two brothers, Elias Kallevig of Willmar, Rt. 1, and Ole Kallevig of Spicer survive, as do two sisters, Karine and Agatha of Finnaas, Norway.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the home at 1:30 and from the Vinje church at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Arnt Vaaler. Mrs. Vaaler sant solos. Burial was at Fairview, the pallbearers being John Englund, K.T. Rykken, C.A. Peterson, John Skare, Albert Kvam and Iver Alme, all of Willmar.

KARI EMBERLAND KALLEVIG

Funeral services for the late Mrs. J.M. Kallevig were held December 17 at the Finje church in this city, conducted by the Rev. Arnt Vaaler, pastor of the church. A solo was sung by Ingvald Rykken and a trio composed of Misses Hazel and Ruth Dale, Ella Bakken also sang. Burial was in Fairview, six sons carrying the remains of their mother to the final resting place.

Mrs. Kari Emberland Kallevig was born March 25, 1859 in the vicinity of Haugesund, Norway. Her death occurred December 12 last at the home on Sixth Street South in Willmar. She was ill eight days from complications attendant upon old age.

Her youth was spent in Norway and there she secured a common school education. In Norway, in 1881, she was married to Johannes M. Kallevig and in 1886 they came to the United States. They came immediately to Kandiyohi and resided in the Norway Lake community until 1913. In that year they moved to Willmar and here Mrs. Kallevig resided until her death. Mr. Kallevig preceded her from this life, passing away November 4, 1931.

On April 19, 1931 Mr. & Mrs. Kallevig observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Kallevig is survived by the following children: Bertha Nelson of Kerkhoven; John, residing in Montana; Andrew of Alberta, Canada; Lina Thonvold of Willmar; Peder of Alberta, Canada; Christ, Matthias, Ole and Lorenz of Willmar; Olivia Reierson of Minneapolis; and Helmer of Calumet. All of the children were present at the funeral with the exception of Peder. One sister survives in Norway and there are 44 grandchildren.
