Johann's brother-in-law, Pieter Scholtz, testified that he had driven from Malmesbury to Somerset West after Johann's landlady contacted his mother to tell her "something wasn't right" at the cottage. He found blood splatter on the walls, and Johann's body rolled up in a mat in the cottage.

In June 2005, Justice Rosheni Allie, sentenced Davies to life imprisonment for murdering Johann. He also received an additional 15 years' imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances. The jail terms are to run concurrently. In convicting him, the court rejected his defence of diminished criminal capacity.
