From Doris Waddell's Family Genealogy:

"The oldest settlement in Orange County, Virginia, was the German community of Germanna that began above the falls on the Rapidan, the southern branch of the Rappahannock river. The first colony, of 12 families and 42 persons, came from the area around Siegen, Germany in April, 1714, and were in debt for their passage. ... This group organized the first congregation of the German Reformed Church.

"The second colony of about twenty families, came in 1717 from the Alsace, and the Palatinate. This group were Lutherans and the Hebron Church, near the Robertson River, stands as a memorial to these early settlers.

"Johann Jost Merten (John Joseph Martin) and John George Kemper were in that first group of families who came from Muesen, Nassau-Siegen, Germany. John Merten's grandson, Benjamin Martin married John Kemper's granddaughter, Nancy Kemper in Fauquier County, Virginia, in 1781. After their marriage Benjamin and Nancy moved to Barren County."
