About Johannes Jacobus Kotzé
A conversation with Mrs Fiona Kotze of ‘ Langreitvlei’ solved the little mystery. Apparently JJ the cricketer was – for some unknown reason – known as ‘James’, so he actually is in the old cricket photograph, sitting to the right of his father (section enlarged, below right).
JJ ‘James’ Kotze
Mrs Kotze also told me that an original photograph of the Kotze cricket team is hanging in the Hopefield sports club, of which she is the secretary.
JJ’s cricket career means that there is quite a lot of in formation about him and in fact, if you google ‘JJ Kotze/Cricket’ you will find endless references to his talent. He played for South Africa and 2 home provinces, as well as for London County. His name is mentioned in many cricket websites and his batting and bowling histories are also recorded.
Apart from being known as ‘James’ within the family, JJ Kotze had two cricketing nicknames: ‘Kodgee’ and ‘Boerjong’. The latter is self-explanatory but the origin of ‘Kodgee’ is unknown.
