When Johannes Maree was born before 3 April 1741, in Cape Province, South Africa, his father, Johannes Maree, was 32 and his mother, Sara del Porte, was 29. He married Gesina van der Westhuizen on 15 May 1763, in Paarl, Drakenstein, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 4 daughters. He died in 1831, in Cape Colony, South Africa, and was buried in Cape Province, South Africa.

Hy is die enigste kleinseun van die stamvader wat sy van Maree i.p.v. Maré spel, en is dus die "stamvader" van die Marees in die land, wat in effek 'n nuwe van is.

...farmer of the same surname, and the landowner van der Westhuizen. In 1827 the farm 'Kombuis' was subdivided. That portion surrounding the Cave , Grootkraal, was sold to van der Westhuizen's son - in - law Johannes Petrus Maree ( alias Marais ) and 'Petrus Jacobus' van der Westhuizen "who may have been his son Pieter Jacobus. "The new landowners could come to no initial agreement with the Field Cornet. In an attempt to obtain redress, on 23 July 1828 Marais complained to the Colonial Secretary about the' nuisances' committed by Field Cornet Botha. Not having received a reply, "Maree sent a reminder seven years later!" There is no record that any reply from the Colonial Secretary was ever received by Maree.
