About Johannes Nuss

GEDCOM Note

Johannes Nuss was besides his proffession (Tailor) the local policeman. Gustav Rommel describ es in his chroncile of Urphar the duties of such policeman: He had the inspection over the be ggars and vagabonds. He had to execute the decisions of the local administration. His salar y was in 1839, when he began his official business, 54 Fl 24 Kr. The value was about 10DM/1Fl . One Fl had 60Kr(euzer). The salary was for one year! Since 1865 he got 60Fl, and in 1877 h e got 100 Mark. A Mark of 1877 was the valuable gold Mark of former times, may be of 8DM/1M o f value. Another duty of him was to communicate the decisions and laws of the local administr ation in the village. Therefore he had a big bell and went ringing the bell through the stree ts. At certain points he stopped and read with loud voice his proclamations. Johannes Nuss wa s an original, that is a queer character. He was good humored, liked to drink a glass of win e and was very proud of his bell. It is said that he often transformed the proclamations int o verses. In 1864 he celebrated the 25th anniversary of his duty. The thankful community dona ted him a sabre. He was in duty until his death on June 2nd 1870.
