In about 1941, after the death of his daughter-in-law (Louisa Maria Alberts) married to his son Pietie, Jan & his wife Kattie raised their 18 month old grandson Johannes Petrus (Jannie) as their own. About 1944 they then sold their farm at Muiskraal and moved to 6 Rivierstraat in Potchefstroom in order for Jannie to attend school.
Jan fell to his final sleep on his favourite armchair in the lounge of his home at 6 Rivier Street, Potchefstroom May 22, 1952.
