Pages 654 - 655 (Summarised)
Burger Stellenbosch. Leader of Patriot Movement.
He had disputes with the Church which split the Drakenstein congregation and had the Rev. VAN DER SPUY resign.
He clashed with the Stellenbosch council of war when he was demoted to corporal in 1775 after his return from the Netherlands. He was demoted to private in JUN 1781 for refusing to obey when called up for military service.
Both Tieleman and Johannes played leading parts in the Patriots' revolt against the VOC in the last quarter of the eighteenth century.
In NOV 1784 he was chosen as representative to look after the burghers' interests. On 13.2.1785 it was decided to send a second deputation to the Netherlands. He, Marthinus Adrianus BERGH, Johannes Henricus REDELINGHUYS and Johannes Augustus BRESLER filed a petition in the Netherlands at the States General on 4.4.1786. After his wife's death, who had accompanied him, he returned to the Cape in 1791.
He married Elisabeth ROUX and had 7 children.
