Walter was a Lutheran colony settled by Germans emigrants in 25 August 1767 on the west side of the Volga river in Russia. They were invited by Catherine the Great to create agriculture in the Volga and to act as a buffer between Russians and Mongolian hordes that often still disturbed the area. The settlers were promised homes, start up seed and animals, and land of their own to settle in Russia. Many villages were started and most thrived. The original colonies were called Mother colonies, but when growth could no longer be supported by the amount of land made available to them to farm, settlers moved to Daughter colonies. Walter was a mother colony. The surname Schessler (Schößler) is listed among the first settlers of Walter.
