“Originally, the SCHAAF family was Protestant, and records were found in the Lutheran church of Birlenbach, for which Keffenach was a filial parish prior to 1685. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, the Lutheran pastor … departed and left the Protestant church in a state of disorganization. In November 1685, the entire congregation converted to Catholicism and was included in the parish of Schoenenbourg.

“From 1674 to 1683, the name, SCHAAF, was not mentioned at Schoenenbourg; however, after that date, the baptisms of three children of Adam SCHAAF and Eve, his wife, were recorded: 1. Johannes SCHAAF was baptized on June 24, 1683. … “Apparently two brothers, Hans Caspar and Hans Jacob SCHAAF, married two sisters, Gertrud and Anna Marie FOLTZLOGER; however, the marriage of Hans Jacob SCHAAF and Anna Marie FOLTZLOGER was not found. Perhaps, the family left Keffenach for Wurttemberg in an uprising of 1702 and did not return until 1708. “Beginning in 1708, the name, SCHAAF, returned to the Catholic registers of Schoenenbourg … The following baptisms of children of Hans Jacob SCHAAF and Anna Maria FOLTZLOGER were found in the registers of Schoenenbourg: “3. Anna Maria SCHAAF was baptized on April 12, 1714. … “Sometimes in 1720, Johann Jacob SCHAAF, his wife, and six children left Keffenach for Lorient where they boarded the ship, La Garonne, for passage to Louisiana. Aboard La Garonne, a seventh child was born on January 21, 1721 to Johann Jacob SCHAAF and Anne Marie FOLTZLOGER, and was named Marie Madelaine. “Due to illness, La Garonne docked at Brest, where Marie Madeleine SCHAAF was baptized … “Included in a list of Germans who were at Lannion on February 25, 1721, awaiting transport to Louisiana … we find: Jacob CHAUFF, Anne Marie, his wife, Anthoine CHAUFF, Ansiacop CHAUFF, Anna Marguerite CHAUFF, Catherine CHAUFF, Anna Marie CHAUFF. “The family of Johann Jacob SCHAAF reboarded La Garonne, commanded by Captain BURAT, and arrived in Louisiana in the spring of 1721. “Before 1724, it is probable that Johann Jacob SCHAAF and Anna Marie FOLTZLOGER died, as they are not mentioned in the census. The children of Johannn Jacob SCHAAF were not mentioned in the censuses of 1724, 1726, 1727 or 1731, as they were residing with their spouses or in-laws.” Sources Robichaux, Albert J., Jr., German Coast Families: European Origins and Settlement in Colonial Louisiana, Eunice LA: Hebert Publications 1997, p. 308-312.
