Johannes 'Johan' Taljaard (1969 - 2003)

Brief overview:

Johan (33), was shot dead while he was asleep in his bed, on a farm in Delareyville in the North West, on the night of Satruday 12th April 2003. His wife, Gertruida (30), was assaulted but survived the attack.

Captain Aafje Botma said in a statement released on Sunday that Johan and Gertruida heard their dogs barking around 22:30, but ignored it.

When they were sleeping, Gertruida woke up when a man tried to pull her from the bed. He held a knife to her throat and tried to stab her, demanding to know where the safe's keys were. Another man overpowered Johan and got hold of a firearm which was hidden under the couple's pillows and fired several shots at Taljaard. He was hit in the groin, upper leg and shoulder and died on the bed.

Mrs Taljaard sustained bruises to her face and upper body.
