In 1777, John enlisted at Egremont in Colonel Ephraim Fitch's militia regiment, which marched through Albany and Saratoga to Fort Ann and Ticonderoga. In 1778 he was drafted into the militia again, under the command of "Captain" Fitch. The company marched to Saratoga and Fort Edward. He applied for a pension (R 6092) on 6 November 1833 under the Act of 7 June 1832, which was first rejected, but after submission of further proof, granted. The final pension payment was made 16 May 1839 by a check drawn on the Mechanics' and Farmers' Bank of Albany.

Old Linzey plot on the grounds of the Catskill Game Farm. Plot is poor condition, brush not cut and fence down. A large plot and old, quite a few graves with just a piece of blue stone at head and foot. Some stones missing must be quite a few unmarked graves. John's grave not found. Polly Layman, (John & Diadama's daughter) found.
