Gr - C C de Villiers Vol 2 bygewerk deur Cor Pama
Francois left Lille (Rijssel) in Flanders on 22 June 1686: destination: South Africa. He and his brother, Guillaume, arrived in the Cape on board the ship VRIJHEIJT. Francois owned the farms ‘De Kleine Bosch’, ‘Palmietvlei’ and ‘Schoongezicht’ in Daljosaphat. He later owned the farms ‘Soetendal’ in Wamakersvallei and ‘Lemietrivier’ in ‘die land van Waveren’.
The Du Toit brothers arrived before the mass organized immigration of the HUGUENOTS to the Cape (1688–1689).
Francois was a ‘Heemraad’ for Drakenstein and played an important role in the struggle against the unpopular Governer W.A.van der Stel. DU TOITSKLOOF was named after Francois.
Lille in Francois' and Guillaume's time
(See the Lille photo library on the photos tab.)
In 1667, King Louis XIV (the Sun-King) successfully laid siege to Lille, resulting in it becoming French in 1668 under the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, provoking discontent among the citizens of the prosperous city. A number of important public works undertaken between 1667 and 1670, such as the Citadel (erected by Vauban) [see pic in Francois' photo album], or the creation of the quartiers of Saint-André and la Madeleine, enabled the King to gain the confidence of his Flemish subjects.
