ACCIDENT NO. 38-June 13, 1910-John Ruokanen Red Jacket Shaft. John Ruokanen, a Finnish miner, was killed by a fall of rock at the 69th level North of No. 4, on this date.

At the inquest held before Justice Fisher, the following witnesses testified:

Paul Mechette: "I work at the Red Jacket Shaft for the C. & H. Mining Co. I was working there today when deceased was killed. I am a timberman. We were working in a cutting-out at the 69th level North of No. 4. When we got there this morning we looked over the ground. We do that every morning, that's our business. The trammers were there at the time. The miners were out fixing a pipe at the time we examined the ground. The miners then came in and started to rig up their machine for drilling. John (the deceased) was passing a drill up to his partner when the rock fell and struck him on the head and knocked him down. It was a small rock. When he fell, his head was against my feet. The rock was on his feet. I lifted it off. It weighed about 20 lbs. It came from away up in the back in a cap. It fell about 30 ft. We had examined the ground only a quarter of an hour before the accident and thought it perfectly safe."

Dom Nozzero: "I corroborate Mechetti's testimony."

Verdict: "That, the said John Ruokanen, came to his death by being struck by a piece of cab rock on the 13th day of June, 1910, on the 69th level, North of No. 4, Red Jacket Shaft."

Onnettomuus nro 38 - 13. kesäkuuta 1910 - John Ruokanen Red Jacket Shaft.
John Ruokanen, suomalainen kaivosmies sai tänään surmansa kivenlohkareen pudottua tasolla 69, pohjoiseen kuilusta nro 4.

Tapaturmatutkintaa johti tuomari Fisher ja seuraavia todistajia kuultiin:

Paul Mechette: "Työskentelen C. & H. Mining Co. -yhtiön Red Jacket Shaft -kaivoksessa. Olin siellä tänään töissä kun hän sai surmansa. Oen kirvesmies ("timberman"). Olimme töissä yhdyskäytävässä ("cutting-out") tasolla 69, pohjoiseen kuluista nro 4. Kun pääsimme sinne tänä aamuna, katsoimme missä kunnossa tunneli on. Me teemme sen joka aamu, se on meidän tehtävämme. Vaunimiehet ("trammers") olivat silloin siellä. Kaivosmiehet olivat laittamassa putkea kun me tutkimme kalliota. Sitten kaivosmiehet tulivat sisään ja alkoivat pystyttää poraansa. John (menehtynyt) oli ojentamassa poranterää työparilleen, kun kivi putosi, iski häntä päähän ja löi hänet maahan. Se oli pienehkö kivi. Kaaduttuaan hänen päänsä oli minun jalkaani vasten. Kivi oli hänen jalallaan. Nostin sen pois, se painoi noin 20 paunaa (10 kg). Se putosi ylhäältä takaosasta. Se putosi noin 30 jalan (10 m) matkan. Me olimme tutkineet sen paikan vain varttituntia ennen onnettomuutta ja pidimme sitä täysin turvallisena."

Päästös: "John Ruokanen sai surmansa jouduttuaan kiven iskemäksi 13. kesäkuuta 1910 Red Jacket Sahft kaivoksen tasolla 69, pohjoiseen kuilusta nro 4."
