About John Washington Abrams
"John Washington Abrams was born in Lincoln County, NC on April 2, 1830. He was a son of William (1795-1862) and Sarah Ann McLemore Abrams(1809-1857). Both the Abrams and Abernathy families went to Georgia in the 1840s. He married Mary Little Abernathy, also from Lincoln County, on October 5, 1848. Family Bible pages state that they were married at the bride's family home in Cass County (now Bartow Co.), GA. The ceremony was performed by Elder W. F. Bates and witnesses were Bard L. Abernathy and Seth Abernathy.
John enlisted in the Civil War at Cave Springs, GA, where he was living at the time. John served as a Regimental Smith for the First Georgia Regiment, Company C, under Cap. Haney, Col. Morrison and Gen. Longstreet.
John suffered injuries, after the war, which made it necessary to amputate his leg. While recuperating he carved himself a leg and bowl(pictured). John used a cane the rest of his life.
John served as presiding elder and minister of the Silver Creek Primitive Baptist Church, near Wax, GA, without pay as was the custom of his church."
