My ancestor John Admas Greene · 12 September 2014 · My Ancestor John Adams Greene (1785-1841) By Elizabeth Mackenna For more than thirty years of my life, I have been doing research to find my ancestors. I started my family history when I was 17 years old. In those days, I visited Aunt Teresa, who was my father’s aunt. She told me proudly about our important ancestor, John Adams Greene, who had arrived from England in 1916 and had helped the cause of the independence in Chile. She showed me a newspaper, “El Mercurio”, in which annunciates the death of Guillermo Greene, one of the sons of John Adams Greene. From this day on, I have loved my family who is beyond the veil. John Adams Greene was born in 1785, probably in England. It is also said, he came from Ireland. There has not been found any record of his birth, death, or of his parents. In 1915 he took part in the Waterloo Battle under the orders of Lord Wellington, as a Military Surgeon. Afterwards, he came to Chile in 1916, with Lord Cochrane in the ship named “Cumberland”. He joined the Chilean Army in 1817 as a Surgeon and as a Captain, under the orders of Bernardo O’Higgins, who was the General Commander of the Chilean Army. He joined and helped the patriotic force of men who wanted Chile to become free from the Spanish Force. He participated in several campaigns and battles, such as the Site of Gavilán, May 5th 1817; the Attack and Site of Talcahuano, the 1st of July and the 6th of December in that same year.

He participated in the Battle of “Cancha Rayada” in March 19th 1818, in which the patriotic force was defeated. Here he had the honor of assisting the Commander in Chief, Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme, who had injured his arm. He also participated in the most important and crucial combat in 1918, The Battle of Maipú, in which the patriotic force, obtained the Independence of Chile. After this important event, Bernardo O’Higgins appeared in the battle field with his arm injured and gave a hug to General José de San Martín, who was an allied of the patriotic Force. In 1919, he was nominated as Main Surgeon of the Army of the South, and in 1821, Bernardo O’Higgins nominated him as Main Surgeon of the Army of Chile. Later in that same year, after returning from the expedition to Chiloé Island, he was given the military rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1838, he participated in the campaign of Rebuilding Perú, as Main Surgeon. He returned to Chile at the end of 1839 and in January 1840, he received from the President of Chile the rank of Colonel of the Army. He lived many years in Concepción, and later in San Carlos, where he was given a piece of land for his services given to the Government of Chile. He died in Concepción in 1841. All this years, I have been searching microfilmed records in order to find the Greene Martinez family. I found a few names in one microfilm, a few names in other microfilm. Once, I went to the General Office of the Army in Santiago to find out about my ancestor. I Hoped and prayed to find them all. At last the blessing came; I could not believe my eyes! I was in the Family History Center in the LDS Church in Villa Alemana and the brother who was in charge of that place was in a web page, where there is information of many Chilean families. I asked him to look for “Greene”. Suddenly, I could find all the information of my ancestor, John Adams Greene, all his descendants, many information and important dates. I felt so happy! I found he had married a Chilean woman, Flora Martinez. Together, they had raised a beautiful family with nine children, starting from the oldest: Carlos, José Domingo, Enrique, Juan, Miguel Wenceslao, Adelaida, Guillermo, Flora, and Jorge. I found out that I descended from Juan Greene Martinez. I felt so much love for this family, so as soon as I could, I took their names to the LDS temple in Santiago, Chile. I had a unique experience inside the temple, when I was representing my great, great grandmother and my husband was representing John Adams Greene. I did not see them but I felt they were there and they had accepted this ordinance done in their behalf. I know that someday when I finish my mission in this world, I will meet and hug them.
