Died, at Dresden, Pettis county, Mo., June 24th, 1878, John M Agee, in the eighty-sixth year of his age.

His parents were of French extraction, of one of the best families. They settled in Alabama in its primitive days. Dedicated to God in baptism when a child by pious parents, and reared under strictly moral and religious influences, fruit appeared in his subsequent life and character.

He married early in life, to a woman of devoted piety, sweet and loving disposition. She lived a few short years, then sweetly breathed her last, in heavenly peace. His second wife lived only a few months in unbroken harmony, and closed her eyes forever on earth, to awaken in brighter realms. His third wife preceded him only a little while. She died, leaving on the undying love of Jesus, and bleeding hearts will long sanctify her memory.

From the time of his conversion to christianity, which took place in early boyhood, he remained a constant and faithful follower of the meek and lowly savior. By diligent attention to business he was successful in the accumulation of this world's goods. He was a friend to the poor, his house was ever the welcome home of the itinerant, and always a liberal supporter of the church. His charities were generally conducted upon the principle of one betting the "left hand knows what the right hand doeth." In him we recognized a devoted husband, a loving father, and an unchanging christian. He aspired to nothing less than holiness, leading a life of purity at home and abroad. He established regular morning and evening devotion in his family, not as a duty, but as a great means of grace to worship God in his household and to consecrate all to His care. He held prominent offices in the church at different times, the duties of which he performed with fidelity and usefulness. He was beloved by all of his large circle of acquaintances, in whose midst he had lived for nearly half a century. The Sabbath school children rejoiced to see "Grand Pa" Agee's smiling and happy face. Many will be the vicissitudes of life, and years on years will roll by before the curtains of oblivion will begin to fan away the memory of his many virtues.

For the past three years he had been in declining health, had become familiar with death, and at last, when the hour came, "clothed in the whole panoply of christian faith, he met the monster as a harbinger of rest," and yielding to him the crumbling clay, his pure spirit winged its flight to mansions on high.

He leaves seven children, a number of grandchildren, and a few great-grandchildren, with many friends to mourn his loss; but they weep not as those who have no hope, for he oft-times said, "Wear no badge of mourning for me on earth, but joyfully meet me in heaven 'in the sweet by and by.'"

We would not wish him back again,
On this cold earth of misery;
From Jesus' arms in that blest place,
Prepared by Him for such as he.

Terrestrial things must pass away;
We see them vanish every hour;
These mortal forms of earth and clay,
