About John W. Alloway

Biography

John W. Alloway was born in 1812 in Burke Co, North Carolina. His parents were Abraham Thomas (Strange) Alloway and Mary (Loving) Alloway. He was a Farmer.

John married June "Jency" (Lefevre) Alloway on August 21, 1834 in Morgan, Indiana, United States. Together they had the following children: Abraham Alloway; Nelson Alloway.

John married Malinda (Goodwin) Alloway on June 10, 1842 in Owen Co, Indiana. Together they had the following children: Mary Adeline (Alloway) Day; America H. (Alloway) Williams; Martha Charlotte (Alloway) Payne; Nancy Matilda (Alloway) Oard; Rev. William Azor Alloway; Rev. John Wesley Alloway; Amanda (Alloway) Miller; Rev. James Perry Alloway; Benton Dudley Alloway.

John married Elizabeth (Wagner) Alloway on January 10, 1876 in Ringgold, Iowa, United States.

He died on August 28, 1894 in Ohiowa, Fillmore County, Nebraska, United States and was buried in Anteoch Cemetery, Fillmore County, Nebraska, United States.

He was a farmer. He came from North Carolina to Indiana with his parents as a child.

Jonn and his second wife Malinda lived in Indiana until about 1845, when the moved to Iowa. then moved to Missouri about 1848, to Iowa about 1852, and back to Missouri about 1856.

John and Malinda's were still in Indiana when their first child Mary was born in 1843. They moved to Iowa about 1845, where their second child America was born. When their daughter Charlotte was born in 1848 they were living in Owasco, Sullivan County, Missouri. They were still there when daughter Nancy was born in 1851. By the time of the birth of their son Benton in 1852, they had removed to Mt. Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa. Sons William and John were also born there, in 1853 and 1855, respectively. In 1860 the family was in Sullivan County, Missouri where their two youngest children, Amanda (about 1857) and James (1860) were born.

The 1860 census shows the family at Owasco: John Aloway (49), Malinda Aloway (40), Mary Aloway (19), America Aloway (15), Charlotte Aloway (12), Nancy Aloway (9), Benton Aloway (8), William Aloway (6), John Aloway (5), Amanda Aloway (3), and James Aloway (1).

In 1870 they were back in Ringgold County, Iowa where they remained until Malinda's death. The 1870 census shows them at Mount Ayr: John Alloway (58), Melinda Alloway (49), America W. Alloway (23), Charlotte Barnhill (21), Benton Alloway (17), Ayer Alloway (16), John Alloway (14), Amanda Alloway (12), Perry Alloway (10), and John Barnhill (3). His real estate was then valued at $2,600 and his personal property at $1,000. The family was still there in 1873 when John's wife died.

In 1876 he married Mrs. Elizabeth Williams. The marriage record calls him John F. Alloway. She was the mother of John's son-in-law Isaac Williams.

He was the John Alloway at Mount Ayr in Ringgold County, Iowa in 1880. He was the John Alloway who appears on the 1880 census at Mount Ayr, which shows he was age 61, born in Pennsylvania to parents born in Ohio.

He and his wife Elizabeth were operating a boarding house in 1880. The census shows his Williams step-children, one boarder (J. J. Doud, age 24, a saloon keeper), and a servant (Mary Pollack, age 19, housekeeper). Finally there was a "daughter" Henrietta Ellis, age 7, born in Iowa to a father born in Ohio and a mother born in Nova Scotia. Henrietta is something of a mystery. She is too old to have been the daughter of the Alloway's housekeeper Mary Pollack (under whom she was listed), but her mother's place of birth seems to indicate that she was not a daughter of Elizabeth Williams. She might have been a step-daughter of John Alloway by an unknown marriage. In the autumn of 1885 Mrs. Alloway's Boarding House and the Crawford House, both northeast of the court house in Mount Ayr, were destroyed in a fire.

Another John Alloway appears on the 1880 census at Franklin Township, Fillmore County, Nebraska, but the census is too damaged to read.

In 1887, John Alloway filed a petition for a pension at Sumner County, Kansas based on his son Nelson's Civil War service. The Nebraska State Gazetteer - Business Directory & Farmer List for 1890 and 1891 lists John W. Alloway, Ohiowa, farmer, and J. D. Alloway, Ohiowa, farmer (1890: J. M. Wolf & Co., Publishers, 510 Paxton Block, Omaha, Nebraska).

John died in 1894 and was buried in Anteoch Cemetery, a small cemetery almost exactly on the county line between Fillmore and Thayer Counties. At one there was a Methodist Episcopal church there with the same name.

John's gravestone, which is badly eroded, clearly shows his middle initial as "W." rather than as "F." (The latter initial, more likely to be correct, was recorded on his marriage record to Jenny LeFever.) The gravestone also shows his year of death as 1894, rather than as 1891. The 1891 date is given by the local historical society; apparently a misreading of the badly eroded gravestone. The year 1894 is confirmed by Civil War pension records. Finally, the gravestone and pension records confirm that John died in August, not in July as given by other sources.

His gravestone is inscribed:

I have fought a good fight,
I have kept the faith,
Therefore, there is laid up for me
A crown of righteousness,
eternally in the Heavens.

According to a biographical article on John's son Benton published in Missouri River Reveille three of John's sons became ministers. These three must have been William, John and James, Benton's three brothers. They were lay ministers or circuit riders in the Methodist church.
