John Alloway was imprisoned for Quaker worship in 1660-61, and in 1670. He met William Penn, the Quaker founder of Pennsylvania, between 1667 and 1670. Penn wrote to him very warmly in 1683. The letter is still available in "The Papers of William Penn, Volume 2: 1680-1684".

John Alloway, then living in Wiveliscombe, Somerset, near Minehead, was again arrested for practising as a Quaker and jailed for two months at Bridewell Jail in 1682, and then at Ilchester Jail, Somerset, in February 1684. There is no record of his release date, but it must have been in time for him to get his wife Elizabeth (née Holder) pregnant 40 weeks before the birth in July 1685 of their daughter Mary Alloway.

John's step-mother Susannah Alloway had also been imprisoned at Ilchester Jail in 1681, and she was released in March 1684.

The 1722 Will of John Alloway's brother, William Alloway of Bridgwater, left £500 to John Alloway.
