Military Service

John Arnett, Soldier of the American Revolution from Anson co NC, drafted into NC militia July 1776, served in the Carolinas under Colonel David Love of Catawba, SC, and volunteered in April 1777, serving under Colonel Hicks of Chesterfield SC. Longtime resident of Screven County, GA until about 1830 when he moved to Bainbridge, Decatur co GA. Ga historic newspapers.

John Arnett had a younger brother, William Arnett, b. abt 1767, who was also a soldier of the American Revolution from NC. Both John and William Arnett lived in Screven County, GA in the early decades of the 1800s. William Arnett was living in Screven co GA by August 1807. John Arnett made application for a Rev War pension on 6 May 1833 (S31527) at age 72 in Screven co GA, but was living in Decatur co GA at the time of the application. William Arnett was alive in May 1833 (age 66), per the Rev War application of his brother John Arnett, but William Arnett has no Rev War pension application on file however.

State of Georgia Screven County

On this 6th day of May 1833, personally appeared in open Court, before the Justices of
the Inferior Court of said County, now sitting, John Arnett at present a resident of Decatur County, State aforesaid, but for the last thirty years, mostly a resident in the County of Screven, aged seventy-two years, who being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.
That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers, and served as herein stated.
That in July 1776 or 1777 he entered the service as a drafted Soldier, in Anson County North Carolina, under John Culpepper Captain, David Love Colonel, John Davidson Major, was marched against the Cherokee Indians, was in no battle, served three months and was discharged at Pleasant Gardens North Carolina, the discharge is lost it was signed by David Love Colonel.
In April 1777 he again entered the service as a volunteer at Chesterfield South Carolina under Captain McManis [sic, Captain Thomas McManus], and served three months and was discharged at Camden South Carolina, in this tour he was under Abel Culp Major and Colonel Hicks -- discharge has been lost. It was signed by Colonel Hicks.
That his brother William Arnett of Screven County Georgia, will prove the Service of this applicant.
That he was born in the year 1760, on the 20th day of June.
That when called into service, he lived at one time in Anson County North Carolina and when last called into Service he lived in Chesterfield South Carolina.
That since the Revolution he has resided mostly in Georgia and until a few years past and Screven County.
He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of the Agency of any State.
Sworn to before the Court and Subscribed this 6th day of May 1833.

William Arnett a citizen of the County of Screven aged 66 years, being sworn says that he knows that John Arnett who has signed the above declaration did serve as a soldier in the Revolution, as
stated in the declaration above.

John Arnett appeared again in Open Court, this 8th day of July 1833, and being duly sworn made the following declaration in addition to the foregoing --
In the tours of duty he marched through North Carolina to the Cherokee Nation, crossed the Catawba River at Beaty's ford [sic, Beatties Ford], crossed the Blue Ridge at what was then called the "narrow passage" --
He knew General Rutherford, who was the General in command, he knew Captain Hawthorn, Captain Speed, Captain Robertson, Captain Hay of Colonel Love's Regiment in which he served three months in the Cherokee expedition.
He has no record of his age.
He never received any commissions.
He has stated the names Moses N. McCall and Hezekiah Vickery to whom he is well-
known and who have testified as before stated.
In the Cherokee expedition he was at the Hiwassee towns, which was burnt, and the corn
destroyed, was also at the Valley Towns and destroyed them. Sworn to and subscribed in open court the day aforesaid
