Cutler, armorer, fairly wealthy. Came to Boston on the Winthrop Fleet.
I am not related to these people, just entering information. From the book "350 Years of American Ancestors, Thirty-Eight Families, 1630-1989" by Mary Coates Martin:
"John Audley and his wife Margaret, probably of London, were the first of this family to come to America. They were among the first inhabitants of Boston.John Audley was b. ca. 1602, prob. in London, England; md. ca. 1634 Margaret __in London; d. 18 December 1684, Boston, MA"
(There must be a mistake on the date of the marriage. They apparently came as a married couple to Boston in 1630.First child said to be born in 1635.)
"John and Margaret came with the Winthrop Fleet of 1630.Eleven Vessels brought "The Great Emigration" in 1630.He was not a Freeman until 1634.John Odlin (Audley) ...was founder of the family in America. He was one of the richer inhabitants.....he lived to be the oldest, or one of the oldest citizens, of his adopted town."
"The name Odling/Odlin/Audley is restricted to comparatively few families in america. It still appears as Odling in the London Director. In the Boston town and church records the name Odlin is spelled: Odlin, Odlen, Audlin, Audlyn, Audling, Audley, and Awdley."
"John Audley's descendants are eligible for membership in the Hereditary Society of ancient and Honorable Artillery Company."
"John Audley's will was signed imperfectly 'John Odlin' dated 'fift day of month one thousand six hundred eight foure ore five,' proved 11 January 1685.He bequeathed to sons John, Peter and Elisha, to grandchild Hannah Bumstead; Great Bible to Peter; Bible - Geneva translation and Calvens Institutions; the rest of his books to be divided between the three. He mentions daughters but does not name them."
The daughters listed under his issue were Hannah, b 1648, md. Jeremiah Bumstead; and Ann(e) b. ca 1645, Boston, Md. Governor Jeremiah Clarke, Jr., died 1732.(There is further information about these two in another chapter)
