Wayland Register March 19, 1936
"Funeral services for John Avery, whose death was referred to in last week’s Register, were held Friday afternoon from the funeral home of Don N. Allen, Rev. E.W. Bittner officiating. The services were largely attended. Burial was in the local cemetery. Mr. Avery, who was 87 years of age, is survived by three sons, Edward, Charles and Arch; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren."

“John Avery, 87, died last week Tuesday at the home of his son, Charles, in Wayland. In the days before automobiles superceded horses, Mr. Avery conducted a livery and bus line in Wayland and was well known throughout this section. He also operated the Bryant House stables in that village. A great friend of horses, Mr. Avery inspired many a man to be more kind and considerate with his faithful steeds.”
