THE AYLMER FAMILY OF COUNTY KILDARE
1. John Aylmer of Lyons married Helen Tyrell and had a son,
2. Richard Aylmer of Lyons, Co. Kildare, was born in about the year 1389 and still living in 1432. He was one of the Keepers of the Peace for Co.’s Dublin and Kildare in 1432. In 10 Henry VI, he stood as Sovereign of the Borough of Tassagard. He married Catherine Petit and had a son,
3. Richard Aylmer (c. 1419 – c. 1455) m. Margaret Bathe and had, with other issue:
4. Bartholomew Aylmer (d. Dec 1501) of Lyons m. Margaret Chevers (d. 20 Sept 1514), dau. of Sir Christopher Chevers of Macetown. They had 4 sons and 2 daughters, of whom:
5 (a) Richard Aylmer, of whom presently. 5 (b) Sir Gerald Aylmer, ancestor of Barons Aylmer. 5 © Anne Aylmer m. 1506 as his first wife Sir Thomas Luttrell, Knt, of Luttrellstown, Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas.
5 (a) Richard Aylmer (c. 1479 – 1513) of Lyons, the eldest son, was appointed Chief Sergeant of Co. Kildare on 27 June 1535 (Henry VIII) and was later High Sheriff of same Co. (1543). He married Genet Tew, daughter and heiress of Alderman Thomas Tew of Dublin. He was succeeded by his son,
6. Richard Aylmer of Lyons (1509 – 1559). In 1531, he married Elinor Fleming , daughter of George Fleming (2nd son of James, 12th Lord Slane). They had 4 sons and 4 daughters:
7. (a) Thomas Aylmer, of whom presently. 7 (b) George Aylmer (c. 1540 – 26 Dec 1582) of Cloncurry, Co. Kildare. Married (c. 1570) Mary Hussey (d. 1586), dau of Patrick Hussey, Baron of Galtrim. They had 3 sons. 7 © Sir Gerald Aylmer, created a Baronet. 7 (d) Edward Aylmer married Katherine Fitzgerald, dau of Robert Fitzgerald of Alloone.
7 (a) Thomas Aylmer (c. 1531 – 14/15 March 1586) of Lyons, succ his father and had livery of his estate (20 July 1562). Married c. 1531 Alison Cusack (d. Dec 1623), dau of Thomas Cusack of Cussington, Lord Chancellor of Ireland. They had 3 sons and 6 daughters of whom:
8 (a) Bartholomew Aylmer, succeeded his father and was ancestor of Aylmer of Lyons. 8 (b) Richard Aylmer of Hartwell, left 4 sons. 8 © John Aylmer, of whom presently.
8 © John Aylmer (c. 1560 – 26/27 June 1632) of Ballycannon, Co. Kildare m. (1605) Elinor Hussey (father unknown) of Moyle Hussey. They left 4 sons and 4 daughters, of whom:
9 (a) Matthew Aylmer, of whom presently. 9 (b) George Aylmer (c. 1608 – post 1624) 9 © Robert Aylmer (c. 1609 – post 1624) married Katherine Power, daughter of Piers Power of Monalargie by his wife Lady Katherine, daughter of 11th Earl of Ormonde and Ossory. He died leaving one son. 9 (d) Batholomew (c. 1613 – ante 1681)
9 (a) Matthew Aylmer (b. 1606) of Ballycannon m. (20 Feb 1624) Elizabeth Wogan, dau. of Nicholas Wogan of Rathcoffey, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, and had issue, an only son. The Wogans were celebrated Jacobites and lived in a castle, described in In A description of the State of Ireland ' of 1608 “one of the most beautiful Castles in Kildare and Wogan of Rathcoffey the most notable in the Countyâ€. Nicholas was also a keen advocate of religious freedom and among those Kildare gentlemen to write to James I seeking same. He became a Confederate during the 1640s and he and his wife were captured at Kilkenny – but spared. His lands and goods were subsequently confiscated and granted to the Duke of Ormonde. His grandson Charles became one of the old Pretender’s closets confidantes in exile. Their son,
10 John Aylmer (1626 – 1702) of Ballycannon married and had issue 4 sons, 1 dau:
11 (a) John Aylmer, of whom presently. 11 (b) Richard Aylmer (c. 1654 – 1717) m. Bridget and left 2 sons and 4 daus. 11 © Matthew (b. c. 1656) 11 (d) Thomas (b. c. 1658) 11. (e) Alice Aylmer married (1707) William Humphreys of Hollywood, Co. Wicklow.
12. John Aylmer (will dated 22 March 1704) of Ballycannon m. (1678) Mary Breedon, daughter of Thomas Breedon of Bearecourt. (She m, 2ndly, George Aylmer). They had 6 sons and 6 daus.
