John Barnard was born about 1607 in England and was buried on 27 June 1646 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony. His parents are not known.
"John Barnard, aged 30, and wife Phoebe, aged 27, son John, age 3, and son Samuel, age 1, Embarked from Ipswich England, April 10, 1634, on the "Elizabeth", William Andrews, Master. He was admitted freeman 3-4-1635, was proprietor of Watertown 1636/7, and a selectman 1644." [ from History of Watertown, Bond, 1860.]
He married about 1632 in England to Phebe Whiting, daughter of Anthony Whiting and Anne Sherman. She survived him to die on 1 August 1685 in Watertown.

His wife, Sarah Barnard, came from English ancestry. She was born at Watertown, January 25, 1694, and died at Spencer, September 30, 1755, preceding him twenty years. Her father, grandfather and great grandfather Barnard were named John. John Barnard Senior, born in 1602, came to America from Ipswich, England, in the ship Elizabeth, William Andrews master, in 1634 with his wife Phebe and their son John, aged three, and settled at Ipswich in this State. Her father was a housewright and lived at Watertown, and his surname, Barnard, has to some extent been used in Spencer as a given name in the Bemis and other families. Buried at Watertown 23 Jun 1646. Married by about 1632, Phebe Whiting, daughter of Anthony & Anne (Sherman) Whiting of Dedham, Essex. She died at Watertown, 1 Aug 1685.
