About John Beals, Sr.

'===Disputed Origins

Caution: the date and place of origin of John Beals are presently unknown. Until those are documented any parents attached are Uncertain and speculative. Please do not add birth or christening records without definitive documentation they are this John Beals. Any speculative records should be added under Research Notes.

The following is adapted from "The Beals Family" by Bill Putman[1] with additional citations and notations from other researchers, genealogists, and sources.

John Beals (Beales) was born in Wales, Worcestershire or perhaps Yorkshire in the early 1650s. Researcher Roger Boone gives a birth date of 28 Jan 1650 for John. With his place of birth currently uncertain, his parentage is presently speculative.

No record can be found on any passenger lists to show when or where he arrived in America. Boone feels he came to America from Wallsworth in Gloucestershire, a seaport on the Welsh-English border. Some believe that he, like so many of the early Quakers, settled in John Fenwick's Colony in Salem, New Jersey. There is reasoned conjecture by Ruth Kline Ladd[2] that he may have gone first to Ireland, perhaps Scotland, prior to arriving in America. Ladd believe's he emigrated to New Jersey from Fenwick aboard the Griffin in 1675 which is known to have taken passengers from Ireland and Scotland.[2]

He may have been the John Beals who came to America in1677 with the John Fenwick Colony but this has not been proven.

John was in Chester Co., PA by 1689. But: "in a court case in Chester County in 1691, John testified that he had plowed the piece of land in question fourteen years earlier--i.e., 1677. Thus we know that he was in Chester County by then."

He announced for the second time his intentions to marry 1 Nov 1682 at Chester Monthly Meeting, PA to Mary CLAYTON (1665-1725), the daughter of William Clayton and Prudence Lanckford.

Although illiterate he was the constable of Ashton Township, Chester Co., PA in 1694. In 1711, John was residing in Nottingham, PA when his son John Jr. was married.

His will was made 11 Aug 1726 at Nottingham and proved 17 Dec 1726. He is buried in the East Nottingham Friends Burial Ground in Chester Co., PA [now in Cecil Co., Maryland]

J P Burke. AMERICAN FAMILIES WITH BRITISH ANCESTRY. (Baltimore:GPC, reprint 1975, orig London 1939) p. 2554. John Beals, who it is believed, accompanied Wm Penn to America at the end of the 17th century, and assisted in the laying out of Philadelphia, was b. in England, m 11 Jan 1652, Mary, d/o Wm Clayton of Burlington, NJ, where he settled in 1677, and afterwards of Chester, PA, member of the Provincial Council, Acting Governor of PA 1684/85, member of the Governor's Council during the drafting of the Great Charter, and one of the 1st Judges of Philadelphia.

From Thomas Hamm: "After his marriage, John Beals entered the civil and religious life of Chester Co., in a modest way. By 1684, he had taken up land in Aston Twp, Chester Co. Tradition also has it that he served as a surveyor, although his illiteracy makes this doubtful. He served the Co court as a juror, although his company may not always have been of the best character. In 1693 he served as security for the behavior of one John Powell, who had been brought before the court for drunkenness and profanity "also attempting to ride over several Indian women and being withheld drew his knife threatened to rip them up." A year later, however, John became the constable to Aston Twp. He also occasionally served on the committees of his monthly meeting of Friends. John himself was a conscientious Quaker, as a 1694 court case shows. John' s neighbor Joseph Richard had built a fence on John's land, for which the court allowed John damages of thirty shillings. Having won his point at law, John refused the damages, saying that he would move his own fence so "that they might live together lovingly for the future. "

In 1701 John joined a number of other Chester Co., Friends, including his brother-in-law James Brown and Henry Reynolds, in obtaining a grant of land known as the Nottingham Lots. This land lay in what was then considered to be part of Chester Co., but which the survey of the Mason-Dixon Line in 1767 placed in Cecil Co., Maryland. John's share of the grant was one thousand acres. After moving to Nottingham, John and Mary become increasingly active in Quaker affairs. John was appointed an overseer for the Nottingham meeting, charged with detecting deviations from the Discipline of Friends among the membership, while Mary also held a number of offices. John's accomplishments are all the more impressive because we know that he was lame for most of his later life."

John Beals was the son of John & Mary Clayton Beals of Chester County, Pennsylvania. We are indebted to Bill Putman who has researched this family extensively and provided us with a large packet of material.

Sarah Bowater was of English descent. She was a probable niece of John & Frances Corbet Bowater and was daughter of Thomas & Sarah Edge Bowater. Family records showing her as granddaughter of John & Frances Corbet cannot possibly be right as the dates do not fit! Sarah's birthdate is contemporaneous with those of the children of John and Frances Corbet Bowater. John & Thomas were both involved in land purchases in Chester County, Pennsylvania, beginning as early as 1685. John had arrived in America in 1677 and held a number of religious visits to Friends Meetings on the eastern shore of Virginia in 1677 and 1678. He was imprisoned in London from 1681 to 1683 for his religious beliefs. John presented a certificate at Philadelphia Monthly Meeting on November 4, 1684. Thomas had immigrated to America the year before. He is shown as father on Sarah's marriage certificate.

History of Beals and Bowaters in Pennsylvania John Beals Sr and Jr The will of John Beals [Sr.father of this John], written the 11th day 8th month 1726 in Nottingham, proven Dec 17, 1726, verifies the names of John Beals, Jr.'s first five children. Abstract: To eldest son John, bed and furniture and 5 pounds, he paying to his five children; viz Sarah, John, Thomas, [Mary] Ann and Phebe, 10 shillings when of age. To daughter Mary Harrold 8 [pounds], she paying to each of her children, viz Elizabeth, Rachel, Jonathan and Richard 10 shillings each when of age. To son Jacob, 12 pounds, he paying to each of his 4 children, viz John, Jacob, Mary and William 10 shillings when of age. To daughter Patience Jones the 8-15 pounds that is due of bond of her husband and five pounds more paying to their 4 children, viz Judith, Mary, Sarah and Charity 10 shillings each, when of age. To James Wright 40 shillings. To kinswoman Mary Davis of Philadelphia 20 shillings. Executors: sons John and Jacob. Witnesses: James McMullin, Wm. House.

John Beal is listed as one of the 24 original landholders in Concord in 1681 (see Land). A deed in Aston Township 5 Dec 1688 between a Richards father and son mentions a tract in Aston bounded by land of ...John Beales... . This is shown on "Holme's Map of the Province of Pennsylvania, with Names of Original Purchasers from William Penn, 1681." along Chester Creek in "Ashton Township." We don't find a Beal listing in Concord on that map. John Beale [Sr.] witnessed a land deed on 10 March 1691 in Chichester in Chester County. In 1695 John Beales witnessed another deed for land bounded by Chester Creek. In 1709 John Beals witnessed another deed in Chichester bounded by Broad Street and the Great Road. We do not know if the Chichester John Beals is the same as the one owning land along Chester Creek but the distances between the townships was not great and he might have witnessed for friends who lived nearby. We did not find a deed for the Beals themselves, but then we do not find the Woodwards early deeds in the land records, only in the court records. Chichester and Chester Townships were located right along the coast in present day Delaware County (See Chester County Map Page) as was Ashton Township in 1681. An Abraham Beals witnessed a deed in 1696 for land along Chester Creek. He was probably a brother of John, Sr.. A deed in 1708 refers to land of Abraham Beales that he had purchased of John Simcock. This land was in Edgmont.

John and Thomas Bowater

The Bowaters also lived in Edgmont. John Bowater purchased 50 acres in Edgmont 24 November 1685 and resold it on 9 August 1704 to Joseph Baker, husband of Martha Woodward. A tract of 250 acres was sold for 20 pounds to John Bowater of Chester, farmer, on 24 September 1697. On 14 December 1697 John Bowater sold 100 acres for 10 pounds in Middletown, bounded by Ridley Creek, that he had previously purchased. On 10 March 1700 a 150 acre tract was sold for 25 pounds to John Bowater of Middletown, yeoman. Thomas Bowater was also involved in land transactions: he purchased 100 acres in Edgmont on Ridley Creek on 2 March 1695, but released his interest on 15 September 1697. In 1711 a lease in Goshen describes the tract lying by land of Thomas Bowater and others.

On 4 March 1705 John Bowater is deceased and his widow Frances Bowater of Westtown granted his 400 acre plantation in Westtown for 350 pounds to George Smedley. Analysis of acreage and names of neighbors shows that the 400 acre plantation was probably composed of the 150 acre and 250 acre tracts above. Probably the names of the areas were changing, not the location. On 21 December 1708 widow Frances Bowater bought a 115 acre tract called "Podington" located on the west side of the Delaware River and bounded partially by Chichester Creek. She sold Podington 22 August 1713.

Frances wrote her will 29 January 1720 and names daughters but does not name Sarah - hence we know those family records showing Sarah as daughter of Frances and John are not correct!

Abstract of Will of Frances Bowater (Book A, page 110, Chester County, Pa): "Frances Bowater of Concord, widow. January 29, 1720/1. 12/28/1720/1. To daughter Mary Ails 10. To daughter Eliza Pusey 5. To daughter Ann Chandler 16. To daughter Eales [Alice] Mendenhall remainder of household goods. To daughter Phebe Scarlet 25. To grandson Saml Pyle 4 at 21, to be paid his mother Ealse Mendenhall. Executors: sons in law, Wm. Pusey, Moses Mendenhall. Witnesses: Wm. Brinton, Nathan Newlin, Jean Brinton."

John & Sarah Bowater Beals named their first two sons John & Thomas, John for John Beals, Sr. and Thomas for Thomas Bowater.

After John, Jr., died in 1745, Sarah Bowater Beals transferred back to Pennsylvania on a certificate on 4/25/1748 to Warrington Monthly Meeting in York County where she married Alexander Underwood. She was accompanied by son, Bowater Beals, who married Sarah Cook, granddaughter of Alexander Underwood. More Beals History In 1871 Gersham Perdue wrote a letter to a William Foster outlining the history of the Beals family. (The letter was published in an article "Early Settlement of Friends in N. C.: Traditions and Reminiscences II," The Southern Friend) Perdue writes: "From that worthy man, John Beals, descended a very large number say some thousands of the members of our widely extended Yearly Meeting of Friends in Indiana, Western ?, and Iowa (added by editor - and now 1894, Kansas and Oregon and Wilmington, Ohio) and some yet remain in North Carolina and Philadelphia Yearly Meetings. On many of these descendants precious gifts in the ministry have been conferred...From Chester County, as it then was, John Beals, with his family moved to Monocacy, Carroll's Manor, Maryland. At what time, or how long they stayed at that place I have no account, but while here, son Thomas married, and from Monocacy they moved to Opequan, near Hopewell, near Winchester, Va. I find it told that John Beals died in the year 1745, three years before the family moved to North Carolina, but did not say where he died, I presume it was in Virginia." There are a couple of sources for Monocacy: Pioneers of Old Monocacy, the Early Settlement of Frederick County, Maryland 1721-1743 by Tracey & Dern, 1987. (A portion of this book is online at Pioneer Quakers of Monocacy.) The Beals genealogy is a little off in this book but it is interesting history. The Monocacy book also refers to Poverty in a Land of Plenty, Tenancy in Eighteenth Century Maryland by Stiverson, 1977. Carroll's Manor is not listed in that book but again it is good history.

In preparing the page for son Thomas Beals, we found several errors in dates in Perdue's letter. Above he implies that the family moved about 1748. In the minutes of Cane Creek Monthly Meeting set up in 1751 only Robert and Phebe Beals Sumner are mentioned as charter members but others are mentioned in the first 18 months after setup. Mentioned are Bowater Beals, Sarah Beals, Thomas Beals, John Mills (husband of Sarah, Jr.), Thomas Hunt (husband of Mary). Some of these witnessed a marriage 4/22/1752 so were there by that date.

John Beals, Jr., followed by certificate to New Garden Monthly Meeting on 5/27/1758. More on the Children of John and Sarah Bowater Beals John (III) and Margaret Hunt Beals We have a lot of information on this family but will only include an outline here. John Beals married Margaret Hunt, daughter of William and Mary Woolman Hunt, on 13 May 1738 at Hopewell Monthly Meeting. They had children: John Beals IV (b abt 1738 Va m (1)Sarah Dicks and (2)Susanna Johnson); Rachel Beals (m James Dicks); Ruth Beals (m. John Hoggatt); Lydia Beals (b abt 1739 m Christopher Hiatt); Hannah Beals (b abt 1745 m. (1) William Hoggatt and (2) Joseph Cloud); William Beals (b Aug 1743 m. (1)Rachel Green and (2) Rachel Johnson).

James and Rachel Beals Dicks had daughter Elizabeth Dicks who married Thomas Beard. Bowater and Sarah Cook Beals Bowater Beals married Sarah Ann Cook, daughter of Thomas and Mary Underwood Cook 10 Feb 1752 at Warrington MM, York County, Pa. Bowater Beals was received on certificate from Fairfax MM, Montgomery Co, Pa as noted at Cane Creek MM in North Carolina. Bowater Beals was recommended a minister at New Garden MM in North Carolina 1/30/1779. Their children are listed at New Garden MM (all as Beales): Ann (b 9/3/1755 NC m. Jacob Jackson);Ruth (b 17 Jun 1757 m Curtis Jackson); Phebe (b 23 Mar 1759 m John Jackson)(the three Jacksons were brothers, sons of Samuel); Thomas (b 12 Jun 1762); John (b 26 May 1764 m. Lois Branson); Jacob (b 27 Nov 1766); Nathan (b 25 Jan 1769 m. Esther Fisher); Mary (b 17 Jan 1771); Sarah (b 17 Aug 1776); Charity (b. abt 1778 m Benjamin Hoggatt).

There is a Branson/Cook Website with information on Lois Branson who married John Beals, son of Bowater.

Lydia Jackson, daughter of Jacob and Ann Beals Jackson m Joseph Thornbrough 6 Feb 1812 at Fairfield MM in Highland County, Ohio. Joseph was son of Joseph and Rachel Brown Thornbrough and granddaughter of Joseph and Ann Armfield Thornbrough. Richard and Prudence Beals Williams The location of the home of Richard and Prudence Beals Williams in North Carolina is shown on a map of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Richard Williams died there in 1781 from smallpox incurred from wounded British officers quartered in his home after the battle. Marvin Miller has submitted information on the Richard and Prudence Beals Williams family to the Rootsweb World Connect Project.

THE BOWATER FAMILY The Bowater family was English. Early Bowaters were found throughout the western counties of Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Staffordshire. The particular Bowater Family that the John Bowater who came to Pennsylvania belonged to came from Worcestershire. John Bowater came to America first in 1677 and finally in 1684 to stay. His granddaughter, Sarah Bowater, married John Beals II. Phoebe Beals, daughter of John and Sarah Beals, married Charles Canaday. This is how the Bowater family ties in with this Canaday Family History. I have seen several other histories of the Bowater Family and some have some early generations that I have trouble corroborating. I will begin this short history with the first one I can positively identify, John Bowater. JOHN BOWATER SR. There is a reference in the London Public Records office on June 27, 1622 (fourth month old style) referring to a sale of two shares in the Virginia Company by Francis Carter to John Bowater. The John Bowater that came to America was born about 1629 and was married to Ann Carter, Francis Carter's daughter. Because of this, I feel the John Bowater mentioned in 1622 would have been his (John Junior) father. There is another reference of Francis Carter passing over nine additional shares in the Virginia Company to Bowater of London, Merchant' and others. The total was nine shares and Bowater received two. Assuming the John Bowater born in 1629 was the eldest son, John Bowater Senior would have been married about 1627 or 1628 and therefore probably was born in about the 1600 to 1605 time period. In order to have received shares, he would have had to be over the age of sixteen in 1622. He did not come to America, but remained in England. The family seems to have come from the Bromsgrove section of county Worcestershire. Roger Boone has found a record that John Senior died at Spelalfields, White Chapel, London. It was here that John Junior married Ann Carter, so they seem to tie in nicely. JOHN BOWATER JR. John Bowater, junior or some other numerical designation, was born in Bromsgrove, County of Worcestershire, England in about 1629. He was married about 1650 to Ann Carter, I think the daughter of Francis Carter. There is a record of the marriage at Spelafields Hamlet, Whitechapel, London. According to one source, Ann Carter was born in Bromsgrove in 1632. John and Ann had at least one child, Thomas, who was born in 1655. There may have been others, but if there were, they did not come to America, and I have no record of them. By the 1660s, John had become a follower of George Fox and his Quaker faith. He became a minister or at least traveled extensively spreading the faith.' In 1677, he sailed to America and held a number of Quaker Meetings on the eastern shore of Virginia from 1677 to 1678. The following is from a HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY: John Bowater visited Virginia. In a list of the names and places and Friends in America, where John Bowater was received and had meetings and held services for the Lord, the following are mentioned which are known to be in the section of Virginia (eastern shore) of which we speak: James River in Virginia, James River at Chuckatuck, Pagan Creek, Moody Creek in Accomak, Savidge Neck, Nesswatakes and Ochanack. John's wife Ann died on February 25, 1679 in Warwickshire, England. She is buried at the North Friends Burying Grounds. John remarried sometime about 1681 to Frances Corbet, daughter of William Corbet of Worcestershire, England. He then spent the next few years, 1681 to 1683, in prison in London for his religious beliefs. At the Dudley Monthly Meeting in Worcestershire, on May 21, 1684, John and his wife received certificates to transfer to the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting in America. His son Thomas Bowater had moved to America the year before. John Bowater and wife presented their certificates to the Friends Monthly Meeting at the Governor's House in Philadelphia on November 4, 1684 (9th month old style). John and Frances and their two young children, Mary and Elizabeth, joined the Chester, Pennsylvania Monthly Meeting on May 7, 1688. John Bowater as a minister established his own meeting, the Bowater Friends Meeting, at his home in Nether Providence, Middletown Township, Chester County. Meetings were held there until a new church was built in 1700 on lands of Joshua Hastings adjacent to John Bowater's land. The Meeting was still named after him. In July of 1702, the Bowater family moved to Williston (Weston), Pennsylvania and the old meeting house was renamed the Middletown Monthly Meeting. John was active in both church and community. He was on many church committees and on several Grand Juries. John Bowater died at his farm in Middletown Township, Chester County on November 4, 1704 (9th month old style) and his will, written on July 20, 1704, was proven in court on November 17, 1705 in Weston, Chester County. The will mentioned his wife Frances and five daughters. Frances lived another fifteen years and died in 1720 in Concord Township of Chester County. Her will was proven on December 28, 1720. The Following is what I know of the children of John Bowater. By his first wife, Ann Carter, I know of only one child: THOMAS BOWATER, This is our line and his life is covered in the following section. John and Frances Corbet Bowater had these children: ANN BOWATER born November 30, 1684 in England and died there February 25, 1685. MARY or MERRY BOWATER was born in Pennsylvania on August 25, 1685. She married Stephen Ailes. WILLIAM BOWATER born February 19, 1686 and died young. ELIZABETH BOWATER was born February 23, 1688. She married William Pussey and she died in 1740. JOHN BOWATER a twin born August 3, 1690. ANN BOWATER was the other twin born August 3, 1690. She was the second Ann, the first having died as an infant. She married William Chandler. ALICE BOWATER was born in 1692. She was married twice, first to Jacob Pyle and then to Moses Mendenhall in North Carolina. PHEBE BOWATER was born about 1694 and married Shadrack Scarlet. THOMAS BOWATER Thomas Bowater was born on May 10, 1655 in Bromsgrove, County Worcester in England. Most people researching on the line are assuming that this Thomas is a son of John and Ann Bowater. The age is right. However, there is no proof. He did join the Friends Meeting in Chester County in 1688 at the same exact time as did John and Ann Bowater. There is a reference on page 77 of THE HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY stating "...Thomas, whose relationship to them is unknown, produced his certificate (from Philadelphia to Chester) at the same time." In a later HISTORY OF DELAWARE COUNTY by Smith, on page 448 there is, "Thomas Bowater thought to be a brother to John a minister of Middletown." I am taking the line of least resistance and guessing that Thomas is indeed a son from John Bowater's first marriage. Thomas decided to come to America and in order to pay for his passage had indentured himself to one Francis Fincher. According to the ship's log or manifest, "Tho. Bowater out of Worcestershire, servant to ffrancis ffincher out of Woster City, glover, for three years." Thomas Bowater arrived in Philadelphia on the Delaware River on board the ship called BRISTOL COMFORT on the 28th day of the 7th month in 1683. In the old style this indicates he Arrived in September 1683. Thomas joined the Friends Meeting in Philadelphia on certificate dated in England March 14, 1683. After serving his three year indenture, he took up residence in Edgemont Township of Chester County. When he was 'free' and turned twenty-one, he married Sarah Edge on October 14, 1686. Sarah was another Quaker and was the daughter of John and Jane Edge. For more details on this family, see THE EDGE FAMILY HISTORY, which follows this history. They had two children, Sarah and Thomas. Sarah Edge Bowater died at a very early age on February 26, 1692 at the age of about thirty-five. On March 2, 1695/6, Thomas purchased 100 acres from John Fox in Edgemont Township in Chester County. In February of 1701, Thomas married a widow, Frances Barnet. They remained in Chester County until 1720 when they transferred to the New Garden Monthly Meeting also in Chester County, Pennsylvania. They took their two children with them. Thomas died probably in the 1720s and I have no idea when Frances died, but probably also in Pennsylvania. The following is all I know about the children of Thomas Bowater. SARAH BOWATER was born on January 17, 1688 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She married twice. First to John Beals on September 14, 1711 in Chester County. John died in Frederick County, Virginia in 1746. Sarah remarried on February 2, 1748 to Alexander Underwood in Monocacy, Prince George's County, Maryland. After he died she moved with one of her children to York County, Pennsylvania where she died in 1765. Her life is covered in more detail in the preceding BEALS FAMILY HISTORY. THOMAS BOWATER JR. was born about 1690. He traveled with his family to Guilford County, North Carolina where he died in the early 1750s. I know nothing more of this Thomas Bowater.

Bales implies that John Beals came with Fenwick on the Griffin in 1775, but Sheppard found no evidence of it. Notes attached to the FHL catalog entry for Bales seem to have more information than what Bales has in his book: The earliest known ancestor, John Beales, was born in England in 1650, and immigrated to America in 1675 settling in Salem, New Jersey. He came on the ship Griffin. Two years later in 1677 his name appears on the tax books of what is now Delaware Co., Pennsylvania, as a farmer. He died in East Nottingham, Maryland in 1726.3,4 John was an early settler in the lower part of Aston.1 Family Mary Clayton b. abt. 1666 Marriage* He married Mary Clayton, daughter of William Clayton and Prudence Lanckford, in 1684.1,2 Children

Name: John BEALES , Sr. 1 Sex: M Birth: ABT. 1665 in England 1 Birth: 1655 in England 1 Death: 17 DEC 1726 in Chester, PA 1 Death: 17 DEC 1726 in Nottingham, Chester Co., PA 1 Reference Number: 9407 Note: Both William and Thomas Bales (Beales) have been cited as John Beales father. Both had records of persecution as Friends in England in Joseph Besse's "Sufferings". John and Mary Clayton Beales settled first near the Concord Friends Meeting and in 1689 they had three pieces of property there, totalling three hundred acres. But about 1704 they moved to Nottingham. William Penn had granted some twenty thousand acres in 1701 and had personally given a spot for a meetinghouse, but the border dispute between William Penn and Lord Baltimore and subsequently the Mason-Dixon line put much of the original Nottingham lots into Cecil Co., MD. John Bales, on the original plat had lots 36 and 37, a total of one thousand acres. The Nottingham Meeting was organized in 1704, the first hewn chestnut and poplar log meeting house was erected in 1709 or 1710 and the Brick Meeting House which still stands was built in 1811 with bricks probably made on the site. John Beales was named overseer of the meeting Jan 13, 1709.

in 1675 John Bales/Beales and his father

in 1675 John Bales/Beales and his father arrived Salem, NJ on "Griffin"the first ship to America from London or Yorkshire. In 1677 he wasliving on a farm in Delaware Co., PA. In 1679 had a farm in ChesterCo., PA along Chester Creek in Aston Township across the line fromChester Township. In 1682 he married and in 1704 moved to Notthingham,PA. In 1726 he died in Chester Co., PA. It has been estimated from alist of inhabitants that included John Bales and from a 1691 Court recordof a bundary dispute (in which John Bales testified he had ploughedcertain land fourteen years ago) that John came to America abt 1677. Both Willliam and Thomas Bales (Beales) have been cited as father of JohnBeales, but the preponderance of opinion favors Thomas as John's father. Life Sketch

John Beals I is the ancestral father of 1000's of Beals or Bales families in United States and Canada. He first arrived by the ship Griffin in 1675 along with the John Fenwick colony from England that settled in Salem, New Jersey although he settled in a portion of Maryland in 1677 that later became a part of the state of Pennsylvania, USA. His original farm was in is now in the northwest portion of Chester County, Pennsylvania. His descendants, in the vanguard of western migration from the Atlantic to the Pacific, moved to Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Kansas, and practically every other state in the union before they were states. "The Bales family can justly claim a prominent place in the front ranks of the Pioneers of America". Some of the original Mayflower Colony, arriving in 1620, were still living when John I reached America.

John Beals was in America as early as 1677. He is believed to be the surveyor who laid out the city of Philadelphia. As early as 1711 (when his son, John Beals, Jr. was married), John Beals was living in Calvert, Chester, Pennsylvania (Nottingham MM) -- an area that is now part of Cecil County, Maryland. John Beals probably married Mary Clayton within a month of declaring their intent to marry 1 11th m 1682. About 1750, John and all of his children went to North Carolina. He came to Pennsylvania with the early Quakers, and was appointed overseer of Nottingham Meeting, Calvert, Chester County, Pennsylvania (now Cecil County, Maryland), 13 January 1709. John married Mary Clayton in 1682 and their son, Jacob, was born 1689, Chester County. Jacob married in 1714, Mary Brooksby, and their son, Jacob Jr., was born 1717, Chester County. Jacob, Jr., married Elizabeth Griest/ Criest in 1743. "Early Settlers of Lee Co., VA", p. 973. --Married at Nothingham Monthly Meeting, Chester Co., PA, shortly after 1 Nov 1682. The children of John & Mary [CLAYTON] BEALS were born and married at Nottingham, Chester, PA, and remained there until sometime after the death of their parents (i.e., after 1726). -John BEALS' will (Dated 11 Aug 1726, probated 17 Dec 1726, found on p. 973 of "Early Settlers...") mentions his "Kinswoman Mary DAVIS of Philadelphia." -Edward Byllynge, Quaker partner of John FENWICK in West Jersey was forced by financial difficulties to turn over his New Jersey land to three of his creditors, among them William PENN. They proceeded to organize the land north of Fenwick's Salem, and to sell it off to a number of proprietors, including two companies of Quakers from Yorkshire and London England, sending Commissioners ahead to extingueish the Indian titles to the land. This was the beginning of the Quaker immigration to the American Colonies. --The BEALS or BALES were Quakers and several immigrants by this name came to the American Colonies and settled in Eastern Pennsylvania and other areas. --John BEALS was one among the earliest immigrants and most likely was one of the immigrants with the John Fenwick colony that came to America in 1675, sailing in the ship Griffin, and settled at Salem, NJ. However, no authentic proof has been found to confirm this theory. -In October 1688 the "Grand jury" laid out a road from Ashton to Edgmont which apparently went through John BEALS' pasture. -On 26 July 1801 John BEALS was in possession of a tract of land in Ashton Township, Chester Co., PA. -John BEALS is listed as having 200 acres in a 1689 list of landholders. -Nottingham Meeting, 13 Jan. 1709: John BEAL appointed overseer of Meeting. [Quaker immigration:] The Commissioners sent from England were, Thomas OLIVE, Daniel WILLS, John KINSEY, John PENFORD, Joseph HELMSLEY, Robert STACY, Benjamin SCOTT, and Thomas FAULKE were the first on the ship to arrive. There may have been other passengers on this ship. The second ship, Kent, Gregory MARLOW, Master arrived 16 Aug 1677 and landed at Raccoon Creek with two hundred thirty passengers. Most of the passengers were called Quakers and among those named were: Thomas OLIVE, Daniel WILLS, William PEACHY, William CLAYTON, John Crips, Thomas EVES, Thomas HARDING, Thomas Nositer, Thomas FAIRNSWORTH, Morgen DREWER, William PENNTON, Henry JENNINGS, William HEBES, Sam LOVETT, John WOOLSTON, William WOODMANCY, Christopher SAUNDERS and Robert POWELL. John WILKINSON and William PERKINS were with their families but died on the voyage. Some of the passengers selected a site for a town, now called Burlington, laid out by Richard NOBE, surveyor. The ship Martha, Thomas Whorcup, master, arrived 15 Oct 1677 with one hundred fourteen passengers. Ship William Mind, Newcomb, Master, arrived from Londond 20 Nov 1677, dropped anchor at Elsinburg, this ship carried 60 or 70 passengers, some of whom settled at Salem and some at Burlington. Five or six other ships followed in the next four years, bringing 1400 or more people toothe new towns of West Jersey. Many of the immigrants were Friends [Quakers] as is attested by the fact that a freeholders Census 1699 showed that more than a third of the land owners of the Province were Quakers. The highest percentage was in Burlington Co. Autumn and winter were taken up getting settled, meetings for worship being held in the tent into which the sails of Kent had been converted. The n ext year, however, it became necessary to set up a meeting for business to accommodate the problems of marriage and membership which arose--this was dated 15 May 1678. The first recorded birth in the meeting is that of Elizabeth POWEL, daughter of Robert and Prudence POWELL (sic), on 7 July 1677. The marriage of Thomas LEEDS and Margaret COLLIER occurred on 6 Aug 1677. The certificate of this first recorded marriage in Burlington was signed by Thomas OLIVE, Robert STACY, William CLAYTON, Sr., John CRIPPS, John WOOLSTON, Thomas HARDING, John STACY, William CLAYTON, Jr., John ROGERS, Thomas EVES, Ann PEACHEE, Prudence CLAYTON, and Margaret CRIPPS. The first Yearly Meetings of Friends on the Delaware River began in Burlington in 1681 and were held there alternately with Philadelphia from 1685 to 1760. Burlington Quarterly Meeting which came to include friends in the area from Mount Holly to Trenton was set up in 1682.
