About John Bedgood

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/170668903/john-bedgood

John Bedgood is believed to be a son of William Bidgood and Hester Williamson Bidgood of Isle of Wight County, Virginia. However, these parents have not been proven.

What we do know through family stories and research is: • John Bedgood was of English descent.

• He was born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia and when he died, he was thought to be well over 100 years old. Mention of his advanced years was noted in 1832 in the Pittsburgh, Pa Weekly Gazette, where he was said to be over 110 years old. Also, in 1854, the Rev George White stated in his book 'Historical Collection of Georgia' that John Bedgood was 112 years old.

• John was married twice. First marriage was to Mary Glover. The second one was to Mary White. Neither of these names have been confirmed through public records. Records of these marriages and their names were probably lost due to burned out counties. Around 1900, The 'Bidgood Family Tales', a written record narrated by Wm Thomas Bidgood (grandson of old John) to his son Bud and daughter Claudia, states that his father recalled family history of Old John being married twice, but no names were recollected.

• John moved his family from Virginia to Nash County, NC and later along the Yadkin River in NC, eventually moving into Washington County, Georgia, when land was made available to Rev War veterans. He was a farmer, and acquired several tracts of land by draw. 1805 is the first mention of John in Washington County, Georgia when he signed up for the land lottery.

• John Bedgood served in the Revolutionary War in some capacity. The records found at the NC Archives are not proof of John's service, but they show that he was paid 14 pounds 6 shilling in 1783 by Green Hill, Esq. That could have been for service in the militia or goods provided to the militia. His 'service' is recognized by the NARA, DAR and SAR because he is listed on the Authentic List of Revolutionary Soldiers eligible to draw land in Georgia.

John and Mary Glover had at least 4-5 children:

  • 1-Julia Ann Bedgood
  • 2-Jane Bedgood, thought to have married a Jesse Glover.
  • 3-John Bedgood, Jr married Mary Unknown and settled near his father in Riddleville.
  • 4-Hollie Bedgood, thought to have married a Mr Hawthorne.
  • 5-Elizabeth Bedgood Solomon born 1767 in Nash County, NC, is also likely their daughter. She married Lazarus Solomon and they moved to Georgia.

Her FindAGrave# is 92438916. Elizabeth's descendants are connected by DNA to many Georgia Bedgood’s (myself included).

John and Mary White had at least 4 children:

  • 1-Richard Stephen Bedgood, married Nancy Unknown
  • 2-Samuel Franklin Bedgood, married Mary Rogers
  • 3-Ely Bedgood married Mary Powell
  • 4-William Bedgood

Old John Bedgood is found on the NC 1780 and NC 1782 Early Tax Lists for Nash, NC. He also appears on the 1790 Census for Nash County, NC. 1820 Census John is found in Washington County, Georgia.

John Bedgood is one of the main progenitors of Bedgood’s in the South. His descendants are found in Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Texas and beyond.

No middle name for Old John has ever been found. He has been seen as John R S in some trees, which some mistook for Richard Stephen, but the R S was for 'Revolutionary Soldier', to distinguish him from the other fifty John Bedgood's in that era. Old John did have a son named Richard Stephen.
