About John Ettiene Bies
The funeral Mass for John E. Bies was held 6-8-1965 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem. John E. Bies was born 1-12-1875 at Decatur, Wisconsin, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Etienne Bies. He moved with his family to St. Lucas, Iowa at an early age, and then they moved to a farm south of Salem, SD in 1887. Mr. Bies was united in marriage to Miss Eleanor Roling at Salem on 10-26-1909. Following their marriage they lived in Salem city for a short time, and then they moved to Cottonwood, Idaho. After this they moved to a farm in the Canistota, SD vicinity. In 1920 they moved to a farm east of Salem. From 1931 to 1935 they farmed at Lake Preston, SD. In 1935 they purchased the tavern in Salem, and they were in this business until 1943 when they sold out and retired, due to the ill health of Mr. Bies. Since that time they have lived in Salem city. Mr. Bies was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital about three weeks ago he passed away at that place on 6-4-1965 at the age of 90 years. Mr. Bies was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Salem. Survivors include his wife of Salem; three daughters, Mrs. Antonella Hipschman of Salem; Eleanor (Mrs. Ingalls) of Sioux Falls, SD; and Mrs. Alvina Schoeberl of Montebello, Calif.; two sons, Abehard Bies of Montebello, Calif.; and Alvin Bies of Salem, SD; seventeen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren; also surviving are a number of other relatives and friends.
