Freemason. According to the diary of Augustine Shannon, a Methodist circuit rider, he mentions a connection with an "evil" still. Wills and Estates of McMinn co TN 1820-1870 entry #1139, page 180 and 925, page 146. Served in the Indian War, 1837-1838 in Colonel Vernon Miles Mounted Cavalry. Moved to McMinn about 1830. Husband and wife marriage date - Rhea co Tn Marriage Records 1850 Meigs co TN Census shows his birthplace as TN. 1840 Meigs Co TN census Prominent Government Official 1860 MCMINN CO TN CENTUS Buried Decatur City Cemetary, Decatur, Tennessee Second Wife: Mary Ella Sills from Arkansas married 4 DEC 1830 2nd LT, Cherokee Removal 1836. Served in Capt. Miles Vernon's company, Col. Lindsay's regiment, Tennessee Mounted Volunteers, 1837-1838, as a 2nd Lt. Some show death date as 23 May 1882 in McMinn county, TN. Moved to McMinn county after Hardin's death. Homesite is Blevins Plantation: Colonel John Wilson Blevins, Esquire (Justice of the Peace) (Title Colonel evidently acquired as a landowner and gentleman of prominence in the area as his military rank was that of second Lt.) and his wife, Elizabeth, established their home, The Blevins Plantation, near the present townsite of Decatur, which was then a portion of McMinn county TN. (Formation of Meigs co in 1836 included Decatur and immediate vicinity) The first of their nine children, all born on the plantation, Ruth Jane Vance Blevins was born 22 Sep 1831, followed by Mary Ann on 12 Apr 1833, Sarah M on 21 Mar 1835 and James Duke 29 Dec 1836 10 Jul 1837 John Wilson Blevins enlisted as 2nd Lt. in the 1st Reg. 2nd Brigate TN Mtd Vol for service in the Indian wars. During his 12 month tour of duty, he was stationed at Fort Cass (across Hiwassee River from Calhoun TN), at Fort Wood and Fort Poinsett in Florida. Pension claim of widow affords this additional information. "That at the time of entering the service claimed for, her husband was 36 years of age, 6 feet 0 inches in height with blue eyes, black hair, fair complexion, by occupation a farmer."
