William Boddie is the immigrant ancestor of this family, from colonial times associated with North Carolina and Isle of Wight County, Virginia in the United States. [1] According to family tradition, the family record and court of arms were destroyed in a house fire. [1] A descendant, George Boddie, attempted to rewrite the family's history in a diary that he kept in 1840. [1] In that diary, George asserts that the Boddies were an English family, originally from Essex County. [1] The surname is derived from the word boda which translates to messenger. [1] Boda was a royal messenger of King William I of Normandy. The family's arms consisted of three halcyons; two palm staves crossed and crowned with a ducal coronet. [1] The family motto is By the strength of mind and body. [1] At one time they had ducal rank, but it was lost. [1] The Boddies were also known to be tall in stature, some of whom stood over six feet tall. [1]
William emigrated to Isle of Wight County, Virginia in 1661 with his first wife, Anne, and their daughter, Mary. [2] Since he brought many people with him (67 servants) he was rewarded with a large land grant of 6,700 acres. [3]
He was still in Isle of Wight County, Virginia 1 April 1677, the date he executed a deed, witnessed by Thomas Harris. [4]
“Bodie family ancestry originated in Normandy, France.” Published 12:02 am Saturday, June 8, 2013 By Curtis Thomasson. < link >
The earliest ancestor in the Bodie family according to Ancestry.com is Jean Budd, a native of Normandy, France. He was born there in 1508, but a few years later he migrated to England. He had a son, William Boddie, born in 1526 in Essex England, so he assumed the English spelling of the name. William was married to a young lady named Joan, but he died as a young adult in 1557 in Portsmouth, England.
John Boddie was born in 1550 in London to William and Joan. He and his wife, Thomasine (Mildmay), had a son, Thomas Boddie, born in 1580 in Portsmouth, who was married to Mary Mildmay.
John Boddie was born to Thomas and Mary in 1605 in Norfolk, and he was married to Mary Haeward. John and Mary had a son, William Boddie, born in 1633 in Essex, who was married to Elizabeth (Taylor). William and Elizabeth Boddie are the ancestors who brought the family to America.
They had a son, John Boddie, who was born in 1685 in Isle, Va. He was married to Elizabeth (Thomas), and he died at a fairly young age in 1720 in Isle.
John and Elizabeth had a son also named John who was born in 1712 in Isle. He was married to Elizabeth (Jeffries), and they eventually moved to Edgefield, S.C. where John died in 1777.
John and Elizabeth also had a son whom they named John who was born in 1750 in Edgefield. This John was married to Hannah Allen, and they had a son whom they named Allen Boddie who was born in 1776 in Edgefield. Allen was first married to Penelope ? who died young and then to Elizabeth ? by whom he had a son, Allen Bodie. (Researchers of this family began using the spelling of Bodie at this generation.)
