John Boles was one of the four sons of the original William Boles of Stokes County, NC. He was born about 1750, probably in Virginia, and came to what is now Stokes County in the 1760’s with his parents and siblings. From 1771 onward he frequently served as a juror. In 1782 he is listed as owning 300 acres of land on Town Fork, 7 horses and mules and 12 head of cattle. At the time of his death he owned he owned 250 acres.

His wife’s name is not known.

He died in 1807 and his eight children are listed as heirs:

1. .....1 William Bowles, born Abt. 1772 in Surry (now Stokes) County, NC; He is probably the William Bowles who married first to Elizabeth Reddick in 1798 in Stokes County, NC and second to Elinder Rainwater in 1822 in Surry County, NC.
2. .....2 Nancy Boles, born Abt. 1776 in Surry (now Stokes) County, NC. She married Jehu Jones in 1794 in Stokes County, NC.
3. .....3 Joseph Boles, born 26 Mar 1779 in Surry (now Stokes) County, NC; died 04 Aug 1849 in Johnson County, Indiana. He married Elizabeth Cook in 1803 in Stokes County, NC.
4. .....4 Patsey Boles, born Abt. 1782 in Surry (now Stokes) County, NC. She married James Miller.
5. .....5 Isabella Boles, born Abt. 1784 in Surry (now Stokes) County, NC. She married Charles Miller.
6. .....6 Margaret Boles, born Abt. 1786 in Surry (now Stokes) County, NC. She married her cousin William Boles in 1808 in Stokes County, NC.
7. .....7 Polly Boles, born Abt. 1788 in Surry (now Stokes) County, NC; married James Walker in 1811 in Stokes.
