About John B Bowman, Sr.

Settled in Rockingham County ~1785. Moved to Franklin County 10/6/1788. Bought 230 acres on Griffith Creek from Martin Ihoy for 30 pounds. In 1789 deeded 100 acres in same locality by friend, Jacob Cradler, consideration "Love and Good Will." Later, in 1789, he purchased 116 acres on Little Creek from Robert Mead and in 1792 he bought another parcel of 230 acres from R. Mead. Left to his wife, Elizabeth, his home plantation and 500 pounds of money.

John Bowman was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He descended from Daniel or Jacob Bowman who arrived in Philadelphia, October 2, 1729, on the ship "Adventurer". He settled in Rockingham County, Virginia about 1785 or earlier. John moved to Franklin County on October 6, 1788. He bought 230 acres on Griffith Creek from Martin Ihoy for 30 pounds. In 1789, he purchased 116 acres on Little Creek from Robert Mead and in 1792 he bought another parcel of 230 acres from R. Mead. He died in 1804 leaving to his wife Elizabeth, his home plantation and 500 pounds on money. His widow was remarried June 29, 1811, to Chrisholm Holland Griffith.


born about 1764 in , Lancaster, PA. He died in 1804. According to Sarah Ann Bowman, John Bowman's father, either Daniel or Jacob, came to America on the ship "Adventurer." He landed in Philadelphia on 2 October 1729. By 1785 John was living in Rockingham County, Virginia, and by 1788 in Franklin County, Virginia. He bought a farm on Rocky branch of the Blackwater River in what is now Franklin County.

John Bowman married Elizabeth Eikenberry in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
They migrated to Virginia about 1784 and bought land along Griffith's Creek in Franklin County, Virginia.
John Bowman died in 1804.
