1. JOHN BENJAMIN1 BRAGG, SR. (WILLIAMA, WILLIAMB, JOHNC, WILLIAMD, THOMASE) was born Abt. 1786 in Madison County, Georgia, and died Bef. Jan 20, 1863 in Screven County, Georgia. He married MARY SASSER 1811 in Georgia, daughter of THOMAS SASSER and CLARISY BOLTON. She was born 1796 in Dobbs County, Georgia, and died 1872 in Screven County, Georgia.

A John BRAGG is shown as chain carrier for Elijah BRAGG of Bulloch County

who was having land surveyed on 27 May 1804. The other chain carrier was

a William BRAGG.

I believe this John is the same as the one who lived in Screven County. Also believe

this William is the son of Elijah.

Years later, John's son John Junior married William's daughter Elizabeth.

Also John BRAGG is shown as chain carrier for Elijah BRAGG of Bulloch County who

was having land surveyed in 1818.

John BRAGG, Sr. of Screven County died before 20 Jan 1863, the date on which an

inventory of his house was made at the direction of the Screven County Probate Judge.

The final settlement of his estate was not made until 6 years later in Dec 1869.

Elijah BRAGG was born ca 1760 in Virginia from where he served in the American

Revolution. His marriage bond, dated 15 Jun 1787, is one of the earliest on record

in the Richmond County, GA (Augusta) Court House. He

married Sophia McCORD. He died prior to Sep 1838 in Byran County, GA at his

daughter Elizabeth Bragg Ellabee's home. His estate was probated in Bulloch County.

Elijah and Sophia had these known children:

1. Elijah, Junior who married before Sept 1838 Elizabeth __________

2. Susannah, who married Edmund BURNSIDES

3. William who married Mary HOBBS and then later another lady

4. Elizabeth, born 22 Oct 1806, died 18 Oct 1886, who married on 17 Apr 1821

Between the time he married in Richmond County and took up residence in Bulloch

County, Elijah Senior appears in Burke County. Thomas Sasser was also in Burke

County at the same time. Could this be where and how John Bragg and Mary Sasser

met and married?

What connection was there between John Bragg and Elijah? Does not appear on DAR

records or anywhere else as a child. However, at one point Elijah executed a document

in Bulloch County turning over everything to his wife Sophia, whom he named as

"my present wife." To me, this indicates the possibility of another wife. Could John

have been child of that marriage?

1820 GA Land Lottery, where he is shown living in Screven County at drawing won

land in Irwin County.
