Going under the alias of "James Collins" organiser of the extraction of Fenian escapees from Fremantle for the escape to the USA upon the Catalpa. He had a liaison with Mary Thomas whilst at Fremantle. She got pregnant and was given money to go to her sister in Sydney for the birth of John Joseph Thomas Whereupon Breslin sent for her to travel to the USA to join him, however she declined and married Harry James Thomas instead.
