RICHARD, WILLIAM, AND HUGH, SONS OF JOHN BRIGGS OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS By Edna Anne Hannibal, of Palo Alto, California and Claude W. Barlow, Ph.D., F.A.S.G., of Worcester, Mass.

The records of the Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colonies mention on several occasions "John Briggs", which, by comparison, shows that before 1660 at least five men in the two colonies bore the name of John Briggs. The first was John Briggs (son of Clement) who was born in Weymouth between 1635 and 1640; he may have lived in Taunton, but is believed to have died before 1662 when the other sons of Clement Briggs received land as "Old Timers"...The second was John Briggs who came to Boston in 1638, was driven from there with Anne Hutchinson's party, and settled in Newport, R.I. in 1640...The third John Briggs settled in Sandwich, Mass., in 1640....The fourth was John Briggs who sailed with Capt. John Greene for Warwick, R.I., and settled in Kingstown, R.I., in 1671...Fifth was John Briggs, Senior, of Taunton who is listed in Taunton Proprietors' Records; he was called to our attention by Mrs. John E. Barclay...who quoted an unrecorded deed in the Hattie Briggs Church Collection in the Connecticut State Library, Hartford, which named him as the father of Richard and Hugh Briggs of Taunton.

Mrs Barclay's study of the Taunton Proprietors' Records and the later study by the authors, show that the earliest record of John Briggs, Senior, appears in vol. IV, p. 187, of a copy of the Taunton Proprietors' Records made in 1869 from another copy of the original records made in 1726. "Granted to John Briggs, Senior, a little round swamp lying to the south side of his house, which he bought of James Burt, being next to said house. March ye 2nd anno 1657." From this grant of land in 1657 it would appear that John Briggs, Senior, lived in Taunton prior to that date. this grant is four years earlier than the first one noted by Mrs. Barclay.

In all the Proprietors' Records John Briggs is always called "Senior" which indicates to us that another man by the same name lived in the area at the same time, i.e., 1657-1661. He could have been John Briggs (Clement[1]), or possibly he may have been so designated to distinguish him from his son John. It is very doubtful that these records refer to John Briggs of Newport, R.I., who flourished 1609-1690, and certainly to his grandson John (Thomas [2]), born 1678, or to John (Richard [2]), born 1672, who received Proprietors' land from 1696 through early years in the 18th century. Nor could it have referred to John ([3]%29 Briggs (Jonathan, Clement), born 1671, or to John ([3]) Briggs (William, John), born in 1680 (Taunton Town Records)...

No birth or death dates exist for John Briggs, Senior, of Taunton, but the following deed executed by his son, Hugh Briggs, shows his relationship to Hugh, as well as Richard and William Briggs, all of Taunton.

The deed is the original of 1686; it has been folded into four parts and is much worn and even torn at the joints, so that a few pieces are missing. It has been rebacked with a piece of stiff parchment, so that it remains in its full size, approximately 15 X 20 inches. The ink has faded in places...

Mrs. Barclay interpreted the statement "our father John Briggs deceased" to mean that both Hugh and Richard were sons of John, although in no place in the deed does Hugh specifically call Richard his brother.
