About John Brown of Watertown

John Brown arrived in the "Lion," September 16, 1632; settled in Watertown; was admitted freeman September 3, 1634, and was buried June 20, 1636, age 36.

According to Anderson (Great Migration Begins, Vol. 1, pp. 256-257), there is no evidence to support the claim that John Browne baptized 1601 in Hawkedon, Suffolk, was the John Brown who died emigrated to Watertown, Massachusetts.

Biography

By wife Dorothy, John Brown of Watertown had

  1. Hannah Brown "Potter", b "the 9 day of the 7 m" September 8, 1634; "possibly" m John Mead of Stamford.
  2. Mary Brown, b March 24, 1636[7], no further record.

Dorothy's Second Marriage to William Potter

Dorothy Brown was named in the birth records of both her daughters at Watertown, Hannah and her sister Mary.[2] There is no further record of either daughter, and there is no actual record of Dorothy's marriage to William Potter.[2] However, Anderson calls the circumstantial evidence "highly suggestive."[2] Six acres of homestall and the Remote Meadows grant, which were originally John Brown's Watertown land grants, ended up in the hands of William Potter.[2] This was commonly seen when a widow remarried.

According to Anderson, this was "probably" the identical William Potter of Watertown, who moved in 1645 to Stamford. He was "probably" the step-father of Hannah.[2] Remington calls William Potter either the father or the step-father of Hannah Potter who married John Mead of Stamford.[7] Anderson reports that Hannah, daughter of John Brown, probably step-daughter of William Potter, "possibly" married John Mead of Stamford.[2]

Caution: Multiple John, Dorothy and Mary Browns

A different John Brown (b by 1591) and his wife, Dorothy (Unknown) Brown sailed in 1635 aboard the Elizabeth, settled first at Plymouth, removed by 1643 to Taunton, by 1647 to Rehoboth, died on 10 April 1662 at Rehoboth.[1] They also had a daughter named Mary Browne; she married to Thomas Willett.

Please also see the biography for John Browne, "Disambiguation - Which John Browne/Brown?" This section describes eight different John Brown/Brownes. Two of them had wives named Dorothy and daughters named Mary. The other daughter, Mary Brown, married Thomas Willett.

Disputed Parents, Wife and Children

1. No evidence showing that John was baptized at Hawkedon, October 11, 1601, the son of John Brown and Margaret Beauchamp?

Anderson, in The Great Migration Begins, Vol. 1, A-F, Page 255, disputes Horatio Gates Somerby's assertion that John was born at Hawkedon, Suffolk on 11 October 1601, citing "no evidentiary support." See Horatio Gates Somerby Fraud..[2]

2. No evidence that wife Dorothy's maiden name was Kent. Anderson (GMB) shows only "Dorothy ---".

3. No evidence for John's alleged sons? Anderson, in The Great Migration Begins, states (p. 257) that Bond pointed out "that the land records quite clearly show that John Brown had only the two daughters." A different John Brown had sons (see above).

John Browne/Brown

Spelling of the Name

John's name is spelled "Brown" by Robert C. Anderson in his Great Migration series (in Puritan Great Migration project profiles, we defer to Anderson), however in the Watertown Vital Record, his name is spelled "Browne."[2]

Origin Unknown

According to Anderson, John Brown's origin is unknown.[2] His birth was about 1600, based on his age at death.[2]

Disputed son named John

Only the names of Hannah and Mary appear on the Watertown records, as John Browne was born in England.[5]

Anderson cautions that while some secondary sources claim a son named John who married to Esther Makepeace, this was disproved by Bond. Bond cites a deed in which the husband of Esther Makepeace is called "a Scotchman." In addition, land records show two acres were granted before 1644, directly to the two daughters (which would not have happened, if there had been a living son) [Bond 731].[2][6] The John Brown in question wrote his will on 20 November 1697 (p 145).[6]
